Ok folks its time i came clean. I decided on a...
I can literally hear the disappointment. Sorry folks i had my reasons though. As much as i wanted a 290 or 290X the 7990 offers me more performance. I also get my pci slots back. With my ice-q's i had no room for anything. I've wanted a 7990 since my golden 7970 died. Back then they were £700+ though so i could only afford a couple of 7950's @£460. Once i had the chance to get a 7990 for £400 ish i could not refuse.
If i had a bigger budget, better psu, bigger case, a better mobo and there were AIB 290's available i would have gone down that route instead. As it is for now this gives me what i want, even if its not the solution the majority would hope for.
I've yet to test the card properly but it feels like a quality piece of kit and looks tiny compared to my 7950's. The fans are very quiet as well compared to the Ice-Q. I will of course try some tri-fire before i part company with my 7950's, though i don't think my psu will cope with it being a 750W psu.
If i don't get on with this card, then i will assess my options.
The bad part is the box was damaged and appeared to have been opened. The card does look new though.

Enjoy mate - everyone likes a new toy even if it is a side/downgrade.
I moved myself from 7950s to a single 780 and took a performance hit in the region of 25-35% when both were overclocked so calm down everyone.
