so my Mrs would like a newer car, so I thought I'd gather some suggestions :p

she currently drives an automatic 53 plate nissan micra, which she loves
with a longer daily commute looming (40 miles return trip to work), and with me needing to use her car more often, we decided to get a newer car

Must haves:

- Must be automatic - lots of variations on the auto box out there, but as long as it has a 'straight auto mode' she's happy
- size wise it needs to be small to medium, eg Polo to Golf sized
- not fussed about luxuries and comforts but something that has reasonable levels of road noise would be good (most of those 40 miles are on a motorway)
- economy wise, 45mpg upwards would be needed - and she's not set on type of fuel or hybrid etc.

- because I'll be driving it too, I would prefer it had no less than 130bhp please!

So ocuk, what are your suggestions??

Oh, the budget is 10k
cheers
:)

No less than 130bhp? Has to be some kind of BMW M car or AMG Mercedes then.

Oh, just seen the other requirements :(

How about something a bit more interesting than a Golf, albeit not much. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201310219390152

Bit more stylish, no?

If not, at this budget it has to be an Audi TDI or VW TDI really. I'd stay away from the Ford Focus diesels (before the newest MY12 shape) - they are so noisy and unrefined it hurts. The new Focus diesel is so much better - like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201309208881029 or this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201309068654001.

I'd definitely try and get into the Golf/Focus/A3 size over the Polo/Fiesta/A1 size as the former will be more comfortable, come with more things as standard and will just be a better all round car.

I have the estate version of the Fabia VRS you've linked.

You can get good fuel economy - my best was 56mpg - and it drives ok, but its no Renaultsport clio for handling. A surprising turn of pace for a 1.4

However. There are oil consumption issues - check if it is a CAVE engine code. If it is, walk away :(

I'd suggest the golf though if it is on the motorway. It isn't bad on the motorway, but I've been in quieter cars.

cheers - I owned the diesel VRS a few years ago, which was seriously under-rated little car. I recall some road noise issues in that one too!
