*** The Official Playstation 4 (PS4) Thread ***

I'm just watching the NFS: Rivals stream and it actually looks really good.. it wasn't a game I was originally planning to get but I changed my mind a little while ago and now I'm looking forward to it. You can't really get the best feel for the graphics on the stream but the guys playing it on IGN are saying it looks awesome.... 2 weeks to go :)

It looks like my type of game tbh. I think it is open world as well...

Link mate??

PS4 doesn't use DX, it does however use lots of features that are part of DX

At the Game Developer Conference this week Chris Norden, senior staff engineer at Sony, finally went into some more detail about the underlying hardware.
The PS4 sees Sony move to a 64-bit x86 chip architecture, which will be music to the ears of developers, especially those used to working on PC games. The good news doesn’t stop there, though. Developers will be able to take advantage of Microsoft’s latest industry standard DirectX API — DirectX 11.1, but Sony has taken the time to improve upon it, pushing the feature set beyond what is available for PC games development.

I thought DirectX was a bespoke set of libraries? How can a third party take it and improve it if it's not open source? I thought Sony would be using OpenGL exclusively and building on that?

They can't, all that quote will mean is that the PS4 has a DX 11.1 feature set, not that it actually uses the API.

Just a question about remote play. Does it work off your routers wireless or does the PS4 beam out a signal for your Vita to stream from, or both depending on where you are?

For example if you are in the same room as the PS4 does it pick up the stream from the PS4 or does it still use your router signal?

This is how I have it setup at home, and was hoping to get good remote play access downstairs where the router is, as is pointless for me to use in the same room. I'm thinking I should have perfect connection downstairs as PS4 is connected via a long Ethernet cable (full throughput on cat6) and the vita will be in very close proximity of the router downstairs. If the PS4 beams out the signal will be screwed downstairs but hoping it doesn't work like that?

Sony have taken DX11 and augmented it with a bunch of lower level hardware specific extensions to allow for getting the best out of the specific hardware. It's one of the advantages of having a fixed known set of hardware, you don't have to take a higher level general abstraction that DX and OGL do to accommodate the variety of hardware and architectures they have to cover.

Correct, I think that is a misquote because its slightly confusing. PS4 is capable of using all of the features that are part of DX, so essentially it's DX compatible but not actually using the single DX api as such. Its all quite confusing

It supports both, if you choose local it's a direct wireless to wireless connection from the Vita to the PS4, if you choose remote it does it via the router.

Which connection will be better, lowest latency? I'm assuming direct wireless to wireless (vita to ps4) would be best. Also it says its best to connect the PS4 via Ethernet cable, so how would it do wireless to wireless?

I think we're nit picking here a little, the point was that Mantle isn't likely to kill off DX any time soon as even PS4 is DX compatible using it's features albeit then customised and extended to get the best out of the PS4 hardware. Producing a game using DX gives you access and ease of port (again with customisation) to XO, PS4 and PC in a relatively well managed and common environment.

Agreed, DX isn't going anywhere

Haters? elaborate. As for PES its terrible, i could go into detail in comparing screenshots and gameplay and prove it regardless of the licensing.

just a couple of face comparisons as i couldnt help my self

They are releasing a patch this month with 800 player faces you can also download a option file which makes all the kits names official, but I must say Pes gameplay this year is frustrating at times hopefully they nail it next year same goes with FIFA 14 both have crappy gameplay.

ps4 runs an api thats compatible with direct x upto 11.1. LIBGMC or something, vita uses it as well. Its actually supposed to be more efficient that direct x itself. It also runs a secondary api called shader language. PSL. Its responsible for a lot of the "to the metal" aspects of the coding.

a lot of this is from memory. (Long shifts at work with little to do lol) hopefully it's still correct!
