right i am trying to convince the old man to build him a pc rather than buying one. so i have a budget of around £500 - 600 this is what i have come up with but would like to reduce build price alittle.
arianet stealth type r case -
haswell i5 4430
gigabyte ga b85m-d3h
crucial ballistix tactical 2x4gb
1TB seagate barracuda
500w corsair 80plus
lg 24xdvd
tp link wirless adaptor
arctic cooling alpine
windows 7
gigabyte wirless mouse keyboard combo
AOC value 23.6 led hdmi lcd monitor
£618
would like to hear you comments thanks

just browsing and word etc, no gaming. hes 80 and had the same pc for 8 years which takes 20 min to boot lol. so looking for a quicker boot and wants the 1080p hd monitor.
make sense ?

I'm guessing you've chosen Windows 7 because it's familiar to him? You don't need an i5, could save yourself a load of money going with AMD. They're more than capable of running a very fast office type machine. Which means you'll be able to afford a SSD which will turn that 20mins boot up closer to 20 seconds!

You've got stuff in your list that OcUK doesn't sell, including one item belonging to a competitor (and bearing the competitor's name). You can take them out, and then state the budget you have left over for OcUK parts. Or you can state if you're willing to replace some items in your list, like the case and motherboard.

sorry didnt realise my bad.. ok didnt really look down AMD route as i recently built my gaming pc which was intel, understand amd are a lot cheaper.
The rest look ok?

Maybe consider an APU setup, sounds ideal in this case. List some average prices for a rough estimate on what it would cost.

Gigabyte GA-G1.Sniper A88X FM2+ £80
AMD A10-6700 65watt APU £102
8GB DDR3 Memory £60
Antec One Case £35
500watt PSU £35
128GB SSD (Boot) £70
1TB HDD (Storage) £50
Windows 7 x64
Gigabyte wireless Mouse/Keyboard Combo
LG / Iiyama / Viewsonic IPS 22" LED Monitor £120

£552, then add in W7 X64 and Mouse/Keyboard. Probably hit your budget but includes SSD and better spec monitor.

thanks i see there is a big price diffrence going AMD. thanks for the list so time to convince him, if i bought a pc with this spec on the high street how much would it cost ?

I went for an APU build. I agree with boomstick it would be better in this case. Unless your old man is looking to turn into a pro gamer anytime in the future?

I would guess at least £900-£1000, and that's probably without a monitor.

Edit: That's part for part. Usually you would see cheaper PSU and mobo's go in to bring cost down which is never good! If you were to buy a £600 system on the high street it wouldn't come close to this. Especially with a monitor. The problem with the high street is they can charge what they want because there's enough people out there who don't know any better.

If its just for Office tasks and the like then you don't need to fork out a fortune for an i5 and 8GB RAM etc etc...
