A few weeks ago my accommodation were testing/maintaining the electricity and my PC was badly damaged by a power surge. I tried a new PSU but had no success with this, so I got a diagnostics on my PC and it has fried my HDD, Mobo and GPU. (According to my insurance company this classes as 'accidental damage', which unfortunately I do not hold cover for).

My current rig is nearly 4 years old but I am hoping the CPU will be salvageable to help keep costs down, and I will use the same case.

CPU: Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz
Case: Antec Nine Hundred Two

Ideally I would like:
  • OS on SSD
  • 1TB-2TB HDD
  • 2GB VRAM
  • 8GB RAM (potentially 16GB)?
  • Not to skimp on PSU..
  • Not really too fussed about Overclocking
  • Not bothered about PC being deathly silent

So I am looking at:

Total: ~£622

£650 is roughly my budget without a CPU, however if I had to buy a new CPU I would be able to stretch to around £800 and possibly compromise on other parts.

Could you please also recommend me a CPU to go with your build just in case mine is fried?

Thank you for any input you have!

(If you're interested my previous PSU was an Ezcool Strada 800W.)

If you're keeping the cpu then you may as well keep the motherboard as the one you've picked won't fit the cpu anyway. Your cpu fits in an 1156 socket and that motherboard is 1150.

I prefer the 7950 over the GTX760. Not a lot in it in all honesty, but the 7950s are a bit cheaper for comparable performance. Or if you're happy to spend a little more you could stretch to a GTX770 which is a much faster unit for not much more cash and as you'll be saving on the motherboard there's no reason not to :D

Everything else looks fine.

CPU wise, if you wanted one to fit the motherboard then either of these will do, depending on how deep your pockets and software needs are. If you don't plan on overclocking then drop the 'K' series.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4770K 3.50GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £251.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £179.99
Total : £441.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Ah, I would keep the motherboard but unfortunately it got fried by the power surge.. Would you be able to recommend me a motherboard that would accommodate for my CPU?

While your current chip still has some life left in it, I would be hesitant to invest in EOL tech, just because you may find in a year or so that you feel like a cpu upgrade, and you'd be buying a whole new mobo for it (unless you went for an 1156 extreme chip, but that's fairly pricey!). It really depends on whether you have the budget to spare for a current gen chip right now, but I would make the jump to a newer socket if I was in your shoes. If budget doesn't allow for it, then grab an 1156 board and away you go!
