Hi.

I moved into a new flat and is now Looking to purchase a av receiver for movies games and a bit of music .

Here is what I would like it to be connected to.

Ps4
Ps3
Htpc
Xbox 360
Sky HD

I would like to play all the above devices in 5.1

Budget for receiver is 400.

Speakers I may get later on but for budget of speakers I am thinking maybe 100 for the main front speaker's and maybe 60 for the rear As the rear doesn't contain much power if I am correct.

I will find out the room size but viewing distance from my 42inch tv is probably 7 feet As a guess.

Basically I could even get away with watching a screen that's 55inch from the distance I sit so quite a large room.

Thanks in advance.

Just go to richer sounds and choose what you like, there are plenty in your budget. Ive just picked the Onkyo TX-NR626 up for £300. Does everything I need, 3D ready, 4K ready, spotify ready and has internet radio and other net based stuff. Budget more for your speakers though or you'll strangle your receiver.

Put the rest of your budget into your front speakers and buy the rest later. It's not as simple as going for the most powerful. Ideally, you need to book some time at Richer sounds, line up 3 different receivers, say a Marantz, Yamaha and Onkyo, theyu start from as little as a hundred quid! Even with network connectivity you can get under £200, i went for mine as wifi and bluetooth are built in.

I'm starting with a set of Cambridge Audio S70 front speakers to get me going, i had a listen to them yesterday and they sounded fine, i added the CA S80 sub to the set up for some more low down grunt. Didn't need it but i liked it, so that's about £340 for 2 floor standing speakers and a sub, the rest will set me back just over £200 when i get round to getting it.

True, it won't set the world on fire but for £540 for a 5.1 setup, that's cheap.

Just try different combos and go for the one you like the sound of best. I think sound is down to personal preference, everyone will have their own ideal.

540 is cheap!

i spoke to a mate who has a nice setup himself and his front speakers only cost him £200?

That is what i was asking. if £200 is enough for two front speakers.

Even if i sit down at richer sounds, doesnt the settings on the system play a big role on how it sounds?

If i go with brand A for the front speakers, do i need to stick with that brand for the rears and sub?

No. Only your Centre and 2 Front Speakers need to match. (Same Range)

I've just had the Yamaha V673 amp / av receiver and it's brilliant for £300!

Personally, i'm going for the cambridge audio fronts as they look really good for not a lot of money, they sound decent enough for the money for me, im not kidding myself into thinking they are a match for £1000 speakers as they aren't. Looks are a major factor for me too though.

I suspect you too will be happy with them

cheers all!

plenty to think about!

What about cabling? i heard that you get what you pay for and no point getting a cable from pundland to connect all my expensive gear!

Cabling is important. But when you're not spending a fortune on speakers, you dont need to be spending £20/m lol. QED cable seems alright. Again, richer will sort you out.

You simply need to make sure it's of an adequate thickness. There is no cable magic, they don't make things sound better. The only thing a cable can do is degrade the signal, they don't enhance or influence the differing components of audio.

If the cable is thick enough, it won't degrade the signal and you will have the sound playing from your speakers as you should. Don't believe the cable hype, as the only winners are the people selling you the stuff.

You never *need* to spend £20/m on speaker cable or any other kind, the cabling industry is such a massive con.

They are spot on for the money, What hifi gave them 5 stars. I had a listen to them with the Onkyo 727 receiver, they handled fine. Look out for some bundle deals if you haven't bought your receiver yet.

Ok can you guys recommend me speakers please to go with the AV receiver?

Something like these any good?

I have the 2000Ci Center with that 2070Si sub in my equipment (joined with the 2020i for rears and 2050i Floorstanders)

The sub is excellent (although I rarely have it turnt up due to floorstanders giving out plenty of bass!).

Build quality of them is rock solid.. genuinely feels like they've made the exterior out of granite and the range of them is excellent.

Highly recommend.

Not a great time to be buying a new AV receiver at the moment if you are interested in future proofing - i.e. 4k TV!!

Even if you buy an AV receiver that can upscale or pass-through a 4k signal it will only do so at 24Hz ... fair chance that won't cut the mustard once hdmi 2.0 and 4k blu-rays start being released and you will need a whole new set up.

So if you have any interest in 4k I would certainly hold fire to see what is upcoming at CES 2014 in January.;)
