Following on from my earlier thread, Derby doesn't seem the most ideal place to live, and with Nottingham a fairly short commute by rail it seems to be the winner!

So anyone live in Nottingham? Looking for some nice areas with easy access to the rail station, preferably within 15 minutes walking distance. Are trams to the station fairly regular/quick to the station, viable option in the mornings?

Definitely Radford. I lived there whilst a student and it's so friendly, cosmopolitan and you pretty get drugs and knives and prostitutes whenever you want.

radford can be nice and both bad depends. i used to work there for a while one of my mates mugged at knife point .

ive lived or worked in most of the of the bad areas st anns for 5 years for eg never a issue yet people will tell you its bad.

wollaton , or a few areas not in the main city. bestwood id avoid , bulwell , hucknall, broxtowe ,

is there any areas i missed :p

in all fairness youll be fine where ever you go just avoid confrontation.

nottingham is great and lively though and lots to do :)

get a map draw a circle radius 5 miles of the city center.

Yes definitely. I use the trams to get the station as part of my commute and have found them to frequent and on the whole very reliable (I've been using them since they started).

West Bridgford, the trams not here yet tho there busy building it, how ever, the train stations only a 7 min bus journey away, or 15 - 20 mins walk if you cba waiting for a bus.

If you're going to be commuting to Derby I'd be looking at areas like Bramcote, Beeston, Wollerton as it'll make travelling easier. If you want to be closer to town and the city centre then Mapperley is good. Basically areas I'd avoid completely are St. Anne's, Hyson Green, Clifton, Lenton and Meadows. Radford is a mixed bag but personally I'd avoid it. West Bridgford, Gedling, some areas of Arnold are good but travelling might be harder to Derby.

I live a 15min walk from the station. What's your budget? What sort of things do you want out of a place? (close to town?, lots of space?, garden?)

People in that thread helped me...

I've now got a place sorted about 20 min walk from the station (if that) in a place called Castle Marina (half way between the station and University Park - no idea what the area is called).

One thing I would say is AVOID lace market... The flats and that are pleasant enough, but the noise at night is terrible! especially on student nights.

More Hockley than Lace Market. Plenty of good places south of Warser Gate/Woolpack lane.

One/two bedroom, £650 a month max, near the centre/rail station (walking pref. but if the trams are reliable/quick that's fine too).

Currently unable to drive but that's top priority, so a little longer on the commute to Nottingham rail station could be tolerable for a couple of months.

If you don't catching a bus occasionally then you could do Wollaton, West Bridgford, Beeston for the more suburban life. Otherwise, Castle Marina isn't too bad a shout, actually.

You can find quieter apartments tucked around Hockley as well, just off the main streets.

If I were communing to Derby I'd be looking at Beeston or Wollaton. Easy access to the Red Arrow Bus. https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/services/redarrow

I'd also avoid living in town (Lace Market, Hockley) if you want to own a car. The Park would be fine but probably out of your price range. Mapperley would be okay. Some parts of Sherwood are okay too. But they're not as easy for that bus.

With a car, West Bridgford and further out (Ruddington, Keyworth) become good options if you like a bit of fresh air and village life. You can use the A50 to get to Derby then instead of the A52 which avoids the main throngs of traffic at rush hour.
