Novice requires advice on first self build PC

It's a great match.

I'll just leave that there and let the OP decide (6 mins in) what his preference is. I agree with TTL 100% about having colour first then the silver. Your buddy Ethermaster will often do 16GB with 8GB of the colour and then 8GB of silver on his Nerd p0rn specs. If the budget doesn't allow he tends to stick with the colour first rather than silver iirc.

Want say a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to post and offer advice/suggestions.

Working of an ipad currently and with my fat fingers it's hard to type for ages so please bear with me.

Will never play any games on the machine - PS3 just died recently and never played more than probably 50 hrs in 5 years!

Heard some good positive reviews on the corsair hence the selection of corsair products but open to consider what other members are using and have had experience with.

Struggling at he minute to just make sure I have got the right components together - looking at stuff like colours and the like is a different story ! Although as the 55D has no window probably makes no difference.

David you saying I should ditch the H100i? Will the fans in the case be sufficient to keep the machine cool?

Will the 550D take the H100i, a friend told me that it will only fit with some modifications is this true or false?

Also anyone with any experience of the C70, as the case could see a bit of moving around so the appeal of easily accessible handles is tempting.

I'm not sure on your case questions, but on the h100i question.... it's a great CPU cooler but if you're not overclocking (or even if you're overclocking a bit) the air cooler that comes with the D3HP will be plenty cooling. It's not relying on just the case fans, it uses a fan on its heatsink in the same way the h100i uses fans on it's radiator, the biggest downside being this dumps the heat inside the case not outside (assuming the h100i was set up to be pushing air out) which is where your case fans come in, to replace that warmed air with fresh cool air.

Decent air coolers are almost as effective as 'All in one' water cooling solutions (though the h100i is particularly good) and have the advantage of reduced complexity with just a single fan (or, potentially two fans) that could fail instead of an AIO water cooler which will have fan(s) but will also have a pump and tubing, water that could become contaminated over time gunking up the radiator and so on.

If you were chasing a big overclock then the h100i would be a good option even for a novice (not as good as a full custom water loop but that's way harder and more expensive) but for most uses air cooling is the way to go (It's worth remembering that water cooling is just still air cooling, but using water to carry the heat a short distance allowing us a bigger radiator to disperse the heat)

dear all

i am now near the end of finalising my spec however, needs some help on case. came across lian li, phanteks and caselabs this week. the caselabs are just to expensive so out of the running phanteks looks liek it will be to big for my needs so i'm down to the lian li cases, can someone recommend a case from their range which they may have had a good experience with or know have some knowledge about. obviously having good cooling is a good thing.

I have had the Lian Li V351, it was mATX but of stunning construction...

The side panels and case chasis were aliminium, it was as sturdy as anything. A bit tricky to build in but can't critise the build of the case. :)

Though i do prefer my silverstone case.

am i stupid to pick the phanteks case for my build?

Looking at your initial spec, I think it would be a bit of a waste tbh. You could spend the money better on other areas of the build. The Corsair 540 would give you plenty of space for half the price. Thats just my opinion, im sure some might disagree :D

£200 seem like a lot to pay for a case to me, I'd rather spend sub £100 and put the additional money towards better / more components maybe a bigger ssd? But that's just my opinion, was just looking at the 550D case and it made me chuckle as I looked through the pictures to see the battered box they decided to put in, interesting choice.

I would just get a decent case to suit your requirements, something around the £100 bracket. Use the money saved and get the 4770k.

to be honest the spec i have is more than adeqaute for my needs in fact its probably over spec'd the phantek or a lian li is more about buying a nice case - its something i will see and i really like the style of the case.

to be fair its all about personal choice i agree its nice to have a "pretty" case and its all personal choice what you think is nice and what your willing to pay for it, i personally would rather have a reasonable looking case and give the computer itself a bit more grunt :)

lol just realised i havent change the spec of my pc in the footer, just got myself an i7 4770k, asus z78 pro and 8gb of 1600mhz ram for £350 :D

yeah for what your wanting i guess so, but i always like spec up my kit a bit higher if i can afford, if its with in your budget go for it, at the end of the day your gonna be the one looking at it :)

What other parts have you decided on ? Are you going off your initial post ?

Essentially yes will be running -

x2 hdd's
x1 ssd
Water cooler or may drop that for a big fan if going for the phanteks
x1 bluray drive
and obviously the psu, mobo and cpu.

will probably by one of those lcd fan controllers.

Any other suggestions?
