Has anyone seen 12 years a slave?

Steve McQueen (the fat black British director, not the famous actor) film with that Irish guy. They've teamed up before on Hunger and Shame, both very good films.

Shame was outstanding. The cinematography, the music, the performances were all breathtaking for me. Carey Mulligan's one-take rendition of New York, New York.....yahhhhhh!

It's OK and it will get awards. No surprises in story line, Cumberbatch is good as a good bad white guy, Fassbender is very good as a terrible bad white guy, Dano is outstanding as a oh my god what a douche terrible bad white guy, Pitt is predictable self as a good white guy, Ejiofor is competent but perhaps a little outgrown by the requirements of a story as a lead, I feel it would be an instant hit with much more drama and impact if they secured Elba as a lead.

'Secured Elba' as in, 'Elba turned it down'?

Looking forward to seeing this. To be fair to the casting guys Idris was pretty hard to get considering he was filming already for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom where he was the lead. Would have been strange if he was the lead in both.

Saw this over the weekend. It's hard on the heart, no doubt, but not overdone or gratuitous in any way.

Well worth a squint.

Tremendous cast, and well told. Don't know if Idris would have done it any better, Ejiofor was really good.

I saw it tuther day & think it's worth a watch but the story after he was released has been missed out which is a shame as that shows just how bad it was for real.
Nobody knows where or when he died either which I find strange & interesting.

that was my thought, everyone know slavery bad, the story was good enough but why did they just skip over all the trials/court and how they got off and how he died, far ore interesting than some whippings.

edit: I also said this on the What did you watch last night thread - I couldn't make out 90% of the dialogue because of the hill billy american accent. SOOOO FRUSTRATING.

I know I will find this movie amazing, but I am avoiding it on purpose because I know exactly how I will feel watching it. Working for the NHS, finding the will to live is hard most days but this might tip it. lol

I saw it last night. Its nearly 3 hours long and I almost fell asleep at one point

Its a good movie though, just don't go and see it after a massive dinner late at night haha

Don't let Charlie's comment make you think it's boring. It's well paced and I didn't find myself looking at the time at all. It's a good story and is well told, deserves the praise it's getting.

Didn't mean to sound like it was boring... It was good, I feel it has been slightly overdone with all the hype though
