AMD Radeon ‘Vesuvius’ with two Hawaii XT GPUs in the making

VR-Zone reports that AMD is working on a new dual-GPU graphics card.

The AMD Radeon R9 290X2 (this is how we call it) would be based on two R9 290Xs. That said we expect two Hawaii XT processors on one PCB. This would also mean that R9 290X2 would feature a total of 5632 Stream Processors, 352 TMUs and 128 ROPs. Does it also mean 8GB GDDR5 memory?

According to VR-Zone, the new card would be codenamed Vesuvius. Vesuvius will succeed HD 7990 Malta.

The R9 290X2 is currently in engineering state, so it will take few months (hopefully less) before it appears on the market. I’m going to assume that it should appear shortly before first 20nm GPUs.

The R9 290X is not the only dual-GPU graphics card that we are currently waiting for. ASUS is working on dual-GK104 graphics card, and if the rumor is true, then some partners are even preparing its first dual-GK110 models. Yes, it is actually happening.

PSU sales to spike I feel :)

Will be interesting to see the cooling solution on it. However by the time it hits release maxwell/pirate islands won't be far off. Though if the 20nm jump isn't an upgrade on my 7990 then this may be my next card!

It will need one heck of a cooling solution.

I was surprised when the 7990 was a dual slot cooler, fully expected 3 slots.

This will either need to be a full 3 slot cooler or have a water cooled job on it, like asus.

Intradesting, :p

As said its gonna need a beefy cooler to say the least. Maybe having 2 cores that top 95c on a single board will finally kick amd's ass into gear to get to work on better cooling solutions.

:D

I am sure this will come with some better cooling though and does sound like a beast :)

Thats getting very old and repetitive now ^^^ a thousand times over weeks on end and you start to wonder if some people aught to be in a padded cell.

You don't see people posting this over and over and over and over again...

Anyway... The R# 2## series GPU's are part on the volcanic islands range, hence the name Hawaii and Vesuvius

A bit harsh, as it is the second time I have posted it :( The GPU is called Vesuvius and I put a volcano in place of the fan.

Get a sense of humor....

Why didn't you have a dig at this post?

PSU sales to spike, domestic gas consumption to fall!

Oh give over, that image and others like it have posted so many times over so many weeks its insane.

Time to get over it and move on, its got way beyond a joke. its like that bloke making fun of someone way to much for way to long he starts to get some very strange looks while always protesting "its only humour"

I don't think it will be that hot (if true). The 7990 has a mean cooling setup, I'd wager something similar on a 290X-x2 would be ample.

It could get very interesting if nvidia slap a pair of full fat ti's on a pcb too :D
