When too much is an overkill?

Hi,

Trying to create my first WC build and need some expert advise :)

First: I am concerned abut sound and not going to do extreme OC (nothing more than cheap-ish 3rd party air cooler won't handle)

So I have i5-2500K running and though about adding 290 (or two).

Using low-rpm silent fans, what rads I should use for each? 3x140? 4x140? (btw, any reason to use x*120 instead?)

Or maybe just get MO-RA3 (9x140) for CPU+1x290 OR 2x290?

Also considering rad sizes: is one XSPC D5 bay combo enough? Or should I use twin D5 bay combo?

Sorry for noobish questions, just can't find that nice rad testing link anymore :)

Thanks!

There's a much better better selection of 120mm fans compared to 140mm fans.
You're waaaaaay too much using 9x140 for your build even with an extreme OC.
3x120 is ok for 1 cpu and 1 gpu.
4x120 would be ok for 1 cpu and 2 gpu.
Single d5 is more than enough for your loop.
If however you decide to start overclocking things you will need to increase cooling capacity with more rad space

Cheers, it was an earlier incarnation of my current build. The extra 240 rad did nothing of note for the temps btw. I just stuck it on because I happened to have it spare and couldn't resist doing it :D
The SSD is tucked behind the 360 rad and the HDD is in an external caddy. There's a fan controller in the remaining optical bay.
The entire adventure is in my sig link :)

Sorry for the thread hijack :)

On topic: What Hakanese said :D Although I wouldn't discount an MO-RA3 as that would cover you very nicely with a cpu/gpu/gpu setup and allow you to run fans in virtual silence.
It an option at least, though certainly not necessary.

If its an external rad like the MO-RA3, i dont think its overkill since they are great value for money and give you plenty of radiator. If you want to go super quiet though, get a 9x120 (phobya do a great one) radiator and only use 4 180 fans rather than 120 fans. Though the fans aren't as good static pressure wise, you have so much radiator overhead that it doesn't matter.

im certainly interested in the MO-RA3 (9x140) been looking for build logs but all I could find are german, I would like too mount the pump on the rad if possible but not sure about wiring ect or even which pump.

Sounds like the phobya 1080 suits your needs well. Fit it with 4 180 fans for minimum noise and get the mounting box for it to, as it allows you to mount pumps and reservoirs onto it.

It doesn't require anything special. A D5/EK4.0 will work just fine.
There are a few mounting options out there depending on whether you're mounting just the pump or res/pump combo.

I did look at the phobya bud, the reviews I read were much the same for both rads so I chose the MO-RA3 on looks tbh:)
@petey. was going to go for a res pump combo mate but I will need loads of advice.

Reason why i suggested teh 1080 over the MO-RA3 is because it has a casing with mounts for reservoirs and pumps, but i am sure he MO has one as well, i just haven't seen it in many builds.

Either one will do everything you are after and more.
