Opinions on 206 Gti 180

Thinking about a little runabout to use for the school runs but I still fondly remember the good old days of 205 and Golf MK1 Gti

Is this likely to be reliable and as much fun ?

Can get a good 8 year old for under 2k -seems like a bargain

Its not really comparable to the old GTI's, it just doesnt have that something special.

Its french so will break on you electrically, and trim will be made of stinky french cheese. But it will be fun, nice engine, and not a bad chassis, just not as fun as old french hatches.

I'd buy a Clio 172/182 instead.

The 206 is such a horrible car that I don't think a reasonably powerful engine and sporting pretensions can turn it into a halfway-decent one.

Elephant bum finish on the dashboard, horrid offset pedals that are only usable if you're under a Size 8 plus the usual French build quality features.

Look for a good 306, now that was proper Peugeot.

As above, they're pretty terrible though the engine is quite nice

the 306 gti is where you want to be for old school gti fun

Peugeot were good at mechanical engines, but they are rubbish at electrics and interiors.
Do not mistake the term GTI fool you into thinking that the 206 is anything like the 205.

The other half and I own a GTi 180. It's a rattly French piece of crap. Quick yes, enjoyable to drive? Not really as its like being in a tin can. Cambelts etc are expensive to replace due to where they are located etc. We will shortly be looking for a replacement.

That is a nasty looking conversion, mine looked a billion times better!

Also had a plate diff, Xsara VTS quick Rack and Xsara VTS Gearbox.

I thought the Mi16 was the engine of choice for a 205? I knew someone who removed his gti-6 engine and dropped an Mi16 into his 306 - I guess maybe there aren't many left!

The MI16 is lighter but the GTI6 is more modern and reliable. MI16 has all sorts of problems with overheating, warped heads etc. GTI6 you just need to keep an eye on the cambelt.
