New AMD Desktop Roadmap - No SR for FX in 2014

In 2 years, at the current rate of progress wont APU's have a GPU equal to something like a 7870 (or more??).

I'm guessing they're wanting smooth 1080p (30fps & Anti Aliasing) gaming for all those PS4/Xbox ports that are incoming.

APU's will jump in performance with the die shrink.

Now I remember you have to x2 the DRAM, so I only have 1333 memory, just tried it at 1600 and PC wouldn't boot :(

I'm open to suggestions if that's the case on the motherboard, brand preference is not always a good thing

What voltage are you using for the memory?

I find that somewhere between 1.6 and 1.65V works best. Also check the timings, you may need to loosen them a step.

Adjusting the bus clock above 200Mhz will increase the memory bus frequency.

My FX8350 has tested up to 2200MHz on 2133MHz memory and could do more I think. Currently I am running 2000Mhz CL11.

So with no steamroller on the cards, the 8350 is a worthy upgrade from my x4 955? I was waiting around, but I think it's a cheap upgrade for me.

I'm already running a Sabertooth 990fx. First gen board, this one

Far as I know only difference between the revisions are pci-e 3 and moving usb ports around (4 usb 3 on back, rather than 2 and a header). Compatibility says all pcbs, just need a bios update first.

Already got some Genesis grey which runs fine at 1600Mhz and a Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler as already running overclocked anyway.

So should just need the cpu, nothing else. Worth the jump?

Yes, make sure you update the bios before doing the CPU upgrade.

Yeah, Die shrink + DDR4 memory, APU's are only gonna get stronger. I imagine mainstream (non enthusiast) gamers won't even need to bother with dedicated graphics soon in 2 years.

Seems odd that they won't have a standalone CPU to pair with their GPU offerings.

There'll be no point buying a low-mid range card with these new APUs, and nobody will wan to "waste" resources on one of these APUs if they want a top-end card.

Odd.

thx 4770k looks the current top dog for a while yet :)

It'll probably be still top/near the top until Haswell-E and X99 chipset comes out. As the Haswell refresh probably isn't going to add much performance, but Haswell-E and X99 is DDR4 based and also has the option of 6 core CPU's.

Would it not be able to do hybrid crossfire though? Which 'may' give a surprisingly boost to performance?

Would like to see a 6 core Kaveri APU though, that would make an interesting option for workstations.

With the Trinity and later Richland, you could only use certain cards - and from memory, they were not high-end! HD6670 /HD7770 rings a bell.

I guess if these new APUs allow pairing with a slightly better card, a geniune mid-range card, then yeh, it could make sense.

Still not going to be all that tempting for someone who wants a top-end discrete system though?
Would it really be so hard to simply churn out a 8 core, Steamroller, skipping the GPU side of things? Would be a lower power draw, meaning potential for much higher speeds, right?

Thanks, I'll have another look at my BIOS today

I found out looking through my order history with OCUK that my memory is -

Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PXD38G1600LLK)

This will be ok for an 8320/50?

I upgraded to the FX83 as it looked like this was going to be a vacant 2014. The thread has proved it to be the case so going to enjoy a few years of vishera then! :D

I have a sabertooth (rev2) board and it gives a lot of features for what I need. I would go for it and if you havnt already got a good cooler get something like to H100 or similar.

Arrgh if this is true, what a disappointment, was hoping AMD would drop SR desktop next year and have something to offer as an alternative than Intel.. CPU segment is the most boring it has ever been..

Come on AMD, gimme an 8 core SR chip in 2014...

Ugh, was hoping they'd release SR in the first half of '14, be a great option itself and force Intel to at least and at last release a hexacore about where a 4670K is now.

Welp, roll on SR / Skylake in 20....15 :(
