Blockbuster closing 72 stores...

Blockbuster's administrator will close 72 stores

Its administrators, Moorfields Corporate Recovery, said the move was not an "easy decision to make".

The news was likely to be "extremely upsetting" to staff, they said.

Moorfields said Blockbuster had faced a period of poor trading performance across rental and retail sales.

They added: "We must reiterate that, as part of our attempts to turn around the business, today's decision is necessary if parts of Blockbuster are to be saved and a buyer found."

Blockbuster is one of many High Street brands under pressure lately, particularly from online competitors.

Camera chain Jessops has gone into administration; music and DVD group HMV has closed 66 stores; and electrical chain Comet closed last year.

Didn't blockbuster scoff at the idea of moving to online streaming content, i.e. Netflix?

No one to blame but themselves!

When I was a kid we had lots of independent video rental stores in my area. A few years later Blockbuster came to town and opened a couple of large stores. A couple more years later and the vast majority of the independents had gone out of business.

If you live by the sword........

Agree thats what happened in our highstreet.

**** em

It was pretty unsustainable with internet services popping up. I mean £5 to rent a film for a night? Yeah right mate.

Still I have good memories of going to Blockbuster as a kid, grabbing some videos, maybe a PS1 game too. Some popcorn and all that.

I used to live about 50 yards from a Blockbuster and I still got late fines :D

Man I can be a terrible procrastinator.

Im not surprised with their rental prices. :p

Blockbuster were good back in the day, especially for console game rentals and all but they started getting greedy and putting up their prices a lot.

The Blockbuster business model was never sustainable in view of the changing market. How many years has it been since you could download a movie direct to your TV, paying from your living room, or even before that getting stuff sent to you at home via Netflix or Lovefilm?

Other people took the movie rental business, and updated it for the internet-connected age, where Blockbuster stuck with what worked in the nineties, and they paid for it. No one should be surprised that an old business model was killed by a new business model selling the same things, but doing it all better, cheaper, more conveniently and what the customer wants.
