My new Asus R9 280X DirectCU II TOP has been fine the last couple of days, but tonight the temps have been getting quite high and a few games are artifacting! The highest previous temp for the GPU was 73C (it's usually around 69C), but tonight it's been running at around 82C and a few games are glitching/artifacting.

Absolutely nothing has been changed since installing the card a few days ago and i'm using the latest AMD drivers. The case also has good airflow and no dust. Anyone have any ideas what could be happening?

I really don't want to RMA another 280X GPU! :(

Have you turned your heating on? Just asking, I don't think you should be getting glitches at 73c either way.

Ambient temperature is always around 22/23c... The glitches start happening when the GPU reaches around 78-80c and so far it's reached 82c when gaming! I dread to think what temps it would reach if running benchmark tools!

All the reviews show this model running below 70c at full load. Something is definitely wrong and it seems others are having artifact issues with Asus 280X based cards after doing a bit of googling :(.

Faulty card or poor heatsink/tim installation? Time for an RMA I think.

I remember Asus had issues with loosely fitted coolers on their 7950/7970 DirectCU II cards. I'll take this one out and inspect it later.

what is your setup like? does the card have enough airflow? post a pic of your pc so we can see if there are any issues

No issues with the PC setup, it's pretty standard with 2 intake fans on the front (one aimed at the GPU and a smaller one for the bottom HDD bay), a rear exhaust fan and a top exhaust fan. There's plenty of space around the GPU for it to breathe and i never had heat issues with my old Radeon 7950 or the GTX 660Ti i was temporarily using. One side of the case is mesh too.

Full specs:

- Intel Core i7 3770K (running stock)
- Biostar TH67XE mATX motherboard - it's old but i never felt the need to replace it when upgrading to Ivy as it still supports USB 3.0, SATA 6gb/s and PCIe 3.0... And it's been 100% reliable ;).
- 8GB Corsair Vengeance LP (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
- 1TB SATA HDD
- LG Blu-ray drive
- 600W Cooler Master Silent Pro gold with 48A on the 12V rail (+90% gold efficiency rated).
- In Win Dragon Slayer mATX tower case (good case, crap name :D).

Anyway, i also ran Unigine Heaven for about half an hour and it only peaked at 75C (ultra settings)... Strange as some of my games have been going over 80C.

temps seem fine to be tbh. my 7970 reaches similar temps which is the same card but i have a sapphire cooler.

heaven bench does not make my card produce as much heat as Tomb raider does, the card is not overheating so id say its fine.

The temps don't look too high (although 80c is borderline for me), but it's the graphical problems i get when the GPU reaches around 80c.

Anyway, i took out the card and have noticed the big heavy cooler is only held in place with 4 screws around the actual GPU... And one of the standoffs on the actual cooler looks like it has lifted a bit (slight gap between the standoff and the PCB). I suppose this kind of thing can happen with a heavy cooler facing downwards in a tower case, although it's a first for me.

It seems to be the exact problem they had with the 7950/7970 coolers! I wish i'd gone for that 4GB GTX 770 now as this is going to be the second 280x i have to return :(.

Having just RMA'd two Matrix Plat 7970s, I won't go near ASUS Gcards again. Not what you wish to hear, sorry, but my cards were awful. Both gave graphical glitches in BF4, BF3, Crysis 3 and Tombraider.

I bought two MSI 280Xs instead.

OCUK were a pleasure to deal with wrt. the RMA.

Do you use GPU Tweak? I found that raising the Load Line to max was the only way to avoid 85degC+ temps. Ridiculous for a card that is supposed to boast an advanced cooler

I saw that a few people had issues with the Matrix and DirectCU II cards after doing a bit of googling... All related to temps and glitching. I don't use GPU tweak (used it once to confirm this card has only 1 working VRM temp sensor).

What are the VRM temps like with those MSI cards? The reviews said they ran too hot, but that issue might have been fixed by now.

Just did the 15 minutes Furmark burn-in test (1080p). The GPU reached 86C (fans were quite audible at 61%) and the VRMs hit 84C. The GPU was also constantly throttling to 970MHz though... Do these temps seem ok for 15 minutes of Furmark? Didn't notice any artifacting/glitches either at those temps.

Seriously, load up GPU Tweak and set the Load Line to 100%/max. Then run furmark again. Let us know the results.

What is the airflow like in your case? Remember these are not blowing coolers, they expel air into your case. You need to remove it.

Overall, as I said, I am not convinced by ASUS' cooler. The Matrix Platinum I had was a triple slot and yet I also reached 90deg at one point in BF4. Crazy!!

These MSI 280Xs are a dream. Had a lil' bios issue at the start but once flashed, they reach 1150MHz no problems.

It appears GPU Tweak doesn't have the load line feature for DirectCU II cards... I think it must be a Matrix only feature. Airflow in my case is good :).
