Should Gary Barlow return his OBE?

I avoid as much Tax as I possibly can, it's legal. I would do it no matter my income. Everyone should do it, anyone giving people a hard time for doing something legal needs to go take a hike.

1. We'd end up like Greece in the end, no?
2. Not all of us can avoid tax. PAYE takes care of that.

Then choose to strike out on your own and try to run a business along with its associated expenses. I bet at that point you aren't volunteering to give away your money when legally its yours.

I think your Greece point was that they were practising Tax Evasion - the one where you dont declare everything and cheat the system that way.

I, if I could (and I can't) But if I could, I'd avoid as much tax as possible, I just see it as funding the welfare state, and yes, I know not all of it does but still.

I doubt you avoid tax in a way that wasn't intended by HMRC.

Carr's arrangements are being legally challenged by HMRC last time I checked.

Yes but if you read deeper - HMRC were aware of the setup in place and whilst asked several times for its validity did nothing to say whether they thought it was OK or not. Recently the targets have moved to these schemes and whilst I would accept HMRC "clarifying" the rules and saying this wasnt in line with those rules what they are actually doing is declaring this and the imposing retrospective taxes going back years putting many people of of a home and making them bankrupt. You could argue the rights and wrongs of boths sides but its the clarity of the rule which need to be sorted out so everyone can play to the same standards

No clarification is needed, don't avoid tax, those that are doing it know they are doing it.

Best way not to get caught with your pants down is not to do it.

MP's are claiming **** loads in dodgy expenses claims yet someone who does work for charity should give his OBE back, yes, I can see how well this works...

Most of these big charities waste a tone of money. I'd rather donate to real local causes where you know where all the money is going.

A mate used to work for a well known charity. Managers would drive around in company BMWs and have lunch paid for on expenses. My job doesn't include free lunch!

It's worth reading the annual returns of the charities you wish to donate to.

It's surprising how many charities are inefficient.

Tax avoidance is not illegal..it is accounting. It is the Governments responsibility to ensure the robustness of the tax system.

Pretty much every self employed individual (and quite a few PAYE) avoids taxation to some degree, whether it is claiming for the extra PC or doing some cash in hand or bringing in tobacco and alcohol from abroad....I suspect that Gary Barlow has raised and/or donated significantly more than the OP to charities of varying descriptions so perhaps we should simply recognise what he has done rather than vilify for what he has not.

This. A lot of people don't understand the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.

Even if he did a Jimmy Carr and only paid 13% tax...13% of £100k+ is a lot more tax than 40% of £15k (which is not even the tax rate that the average on £15k pay!).

I seem to remember our PM having a go at JC when his tax scheme came out, and then someone asked David Cameron how much tax he paid and he refused to disclose it...probably on the same scheme!

it is suprising also how many Directors take a massive bonus from these charities COUGH cancer research UK COUGH.

This. Seems like many people don't know the difference between stealing from a charity and taking a bonus from a charity. One is perfectly legal and the other one isn't. Hope that helps.

So almost like tax avoidance and tax evasion then?
