Should Gary Barlow return his OBE?

Every single self employed person I know tries their hardest to pay as little tax as legally possible, I also feel 99.9% of the people in this thread would do exactly the same. Every trades man I know for example has a secretary and is paid via dividends by the company etc...

I don't, I could be far more aggressive in avoiding tax but choose not to.

More fool you.

HMRC won't bat an eyelid if you employ your wife as a secretary and pay her in class b shares the maximum permissible by law.

They won't bat an eyelid if you decide to invest in new equipment / tools / vehicles for your business at the end of your fiscal year.

They won't care that you claim vat back on things like PC equipment, cameras, even TV's etc etc and use it for income tax deduction.

They expect you to use dry cleaning and the cleaning costs of any workwear as a tax deductable item, even if you are PAYE. (Many PAYE don't realise this.)

Instead of all that I guess you just fork it all over to the government no? Even if you are a touch too aggressive they will just say some of your deductions are a bit too much and ask you to pay the tax on them. I've had a few inspections on my business and I thought I was pushing the boat out with some stuff, I even accidently put my PS Vita invoice in (It was in my wallet and I just gave it too my secretary who didn't question it.) which I didn't spot until the inspectors were looking at it and they didn't bat an eyelid, it turns out they felt they owed me money!

So Barlow claims on Camp shiny leather shorts then?

Disgusting! :D

Easyrider, everyone says that, "oh he has millions, he doesn't need millions, he should give the millions he doesn't need to us, blah blah" yet when everyone gets millions, suddenly they need those millions.
There is a very bad stigma in this country towards sucessful people, Jeremy Clarkson said it over a decade ago
"When people in the USA see someone driving a Ferrari they say "one day, I will have one of those!". When people in the UK see someone driving a Ferrari they say "One day, I will have him out of that!"".

Or if the government announced at the budget a new optional 10% tax that you could pay off you really wanted to.. How many would? Afterall it would be the "right" thing to do.
