Hey all, I'm a big fan of 3D gaming and have been using 3D vision for a while now, so was wondering what you all think of the new Oculus rift headset? I know there's not a lot of info on it at the moment but if they get this thing right it could be an epic game changer, well, maybe?

3d gaming isn't for every one as proven with Nvidia 3D vision, lots have even stated they would love to see the end of 3D as it's just a gimmick, not in my opinion though, 3D vision really works for me so excuse me for feeling a little excited with Oculus rift.

What are your views of the 3D gaming world? your experience with Nvidia 3D vision good or bad? and thoughts of Oculus?

Short vid here for Oculus Rift...

;) Cheers.

I have an Oculus Rift dev kit, and it's superb.

Being a development kit and not a full blown retail product, it does have it's flaws such as the well known "screen door effect" and low resolution (1280x800 shared between each eye for 640x400 per eye), however the effect that you get from using the Rift is fantastic.

When playing Half Life 2 for example, which Valve officially support for the Rift, you are not just looking at things in 3D, you actually feel that you are in the game right there and then.

Mirrors Edge using the Vorpx beta driver is downright terrifying. When you make a jump between buildings you can actually "feel" the sheer drop below you, and the sense of scale is amazing.

It's hard to describe, if you can, demo one. Bloody brilliant.

And with the HD consumer version coming out next year with improved tracking and screen resolution it's only going to get better.

Well I'm terrified of heights but it's good it has this effect, I like to scare myself lol, I really like Luna flight with 3D vision so really looking forward to seeing that with oculus, War Thunder being another. Will wait for consumer though. Any idea what month next year it's out?

As far as I'm aware it won't be released until around Q3/Q4 2014, and it should have at the very least a 1080p screen and improved head tracking sensor though the final spec hasn't been finalized. There have even been rumours of a 4k screen, but that's all they are, rumours.

There are also rumours of a HD development kit being released early next year, but according to the threads I've seen posted by the developers on the Occulus official forums, they have no intention of releasing said HD dev kit as there wouldn't be any point with the official hardware release happening soon after.

I've tried out War Thunder with it, to be honest the resolution doesn't do it any favours and the menus are not easy at all to navigate (the game has native rift support but Ganjin haven't worked on the menus to be rift compatible). It's still fun to have a play around with in free flight though, but the resolution lets it down in arcade mode when the action is happening thick and fast as it can be hard to pick out targets.

However I bet it will look bloody awesome when the consumer HD Rift is released :)

Great info there, we can always rely on someone with the knowledge, thanks Hairydavey, good to hear it will be at least 1080p, I'd be well chuffed at that res.

I bet it will look awesome too, it's fantastic with 3D glasses so I'm just trying to picture how it'd look through the Oculus, end of next year can't come soon enough now. ;)
