Best 'bang for buck' card at the moment?

Hi all,

I'm looking at an upgrade from a 6870. What is the best 'bang for buck' card around at the moment? I realise that's a bit of a subjective phrase, and maybe there's not a standout card. I'm not looking to spend over £200 really, but that depends if there's something around that price bracket that stands out then I can re-consider that.

Early investigations show that either the 7950 or the 670 is good value. I'd probably prefer something from MSI or Gigabyte with a non-reference cooling system (like the TwinFrozr, for example). If you can overclock any of these cards that would be good too.

What about the AMD vs nVidia debate? Is Mantle supposed to bring good gains when that comes around?

Hang on till Wednesday and see if the 280X or the 770 has any specials that suit your budget. They are close to £200 but a special may bring it to your budget :)

The 270X looks pretty good value for 1080p performance at the moment. It's a bit cheaper than a 7950 and £100 off an equivalent 280X. Although daily deals can change that. The 7970 at £215 would have been ideal.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Toxic OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Card £179.99
1 x MSI Radeon R9 270X HAWK OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £169.99
1 x MSI Radeon R9 270X Gaming Edition OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £155.99
Total : £517.37 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Cheers guys. The 7950, 670 and even more so the 270x sit pretty favourably with me due to the price. Which perform better out of the 3? I assume in order of best to worse:-

670 > 7950 > 270X

Is that a correct assumption?

Cool, it might not have been wise to say 'best bang for buck' card on here. It's too subjective a term. A 290 or 7990 is well out of my price range.

Lets stick to under £200 for now. :)

Thanks for the help so far.

Ah that's cool, cheers. How much is the difference between the 7950 and 670?
The 7950 not only has higher memory bandwidth (due to its 384-bit bus size), but also 1GB more vram; for the GTX670, regardless what people say, it has a risk of running out of vram with just 2GB, especially if you by any chance do decide to go SLI/Crossfire in the future. Also, if Mantle works out well, it would give the 7950 a further boost in performance in future titles (particularly EA's future titles).

Got to be a 7950 unless you can stretch a little for a 7970.

I'm playing tomb raider/bf4 on ultra @ 1080p and my 7950 loves it, no issue at all with it.
