Hi, I'm posting on behalf of a friend looking for some advice on a new GPU. He's set a budget of around £500 but can't make a decision. This is the gist of his build...

CPU - Intel Core i5-3570K
Mobo - AsRock Z77 Extreme4 Motherboard
PSU - Cooler Master GX-Series 650W 80 Plus Power Supply
RAM: 8GB of whatever he decides on

He'll be gaming on a single monitor @ 1080p and mostly plays Arma 3/BF4. Is it worth going SLI/XFire? Looking for good performance at ultra settings, as you'd expect with that budget :D

Thanks in advance.

Has he bought those parts yet? At £500 you're looking at a 780, but as you can get one of them for £400 he could put the £100 saved into the rest of the build.

The mobo and PSU have already been bought, yes. The PSU arrived with a slight bend in the framework though, so he may be sending that back.

Maybe get a 780 and use the savings from the £500 to up the CPU to a 3770k?

Either way, a 780 is what you want.

Is the i7 worth the extra money over the i5? I've heard it helps in Battlefield but he mainly plays Arma 3.

A 650W PSU may struggle with SLI/Crossfire.

If I were buying a single card right now I'd go for a 780.

If a replacement PSU is being arranged then you may wish to consider 2 x 7950s and use the spare 60 quid to get a beefier PSU. I can vouch for this setup because it's what I use. :p

Cheers fellas. Will pass those links on and probably return with more questions! Very helpful though guys, thank you.

In arma multiplayer it barely matters what GPU you have, it is all about single threaded cpu speed. Even with the best you'll struggle due to put design. I am fairly certain crossfire doesn't work on arma2.

If he needs a card right now a 780 is a sound choice however if he can wait a short time the 290 is going to be a better card for him especially in battlefield with mantle suport

PSU is being sent back. As it was damaged on arrival. Will be replacing with a higgher wattage PSU. Not sure which one yet. Will depend on what GFX card I get.

why'd you go for ivy when haswell is the same/similar price with better performance?

for the psu would look at seasonic, antec or be quite rather than coolermaster.

a 290 will beat that without breaking a sweat, seeing as it goes toe to toe with the 780 a 770 wouldn't be much of an issue for the 290(apart from maybe in the nvidia stacked games, even then it's not much in it).

I dont see the newer CPUS being the "same/similar" prices to the ivys etc and have better performance. Correct me if am wrong but surely they would make you pay more for the newer stuff?

Does not have Physx which is a big part of arma 3.
