The PS4 doesn't seem like too much of a revolution in terms of gaming or anything other than performing better and games looking nicer.

What revolution to gaming has the X1 brought to the table? If anything it's only TV stuff that we don't even get here in the UK yet that's "revolutionary"

I would class streaming to millions of people around the world with a touch of a button fairly revolutionary in terms of the gaming side of stuff.

Pause and suspend gaming, and start immediately is pretty revolutionary too

Jumping into a friends game and taking over the controller seems pretty cool too (coming soon)

Streaming last gen games via Gaikai seems pretty revolutionary too (coming soon)

What is it the Microsoft have done that is so revolutionary to gaming, please don't say motion controls as that's something that has been rejected by gamers.

Indeed, I think that the PS4s sharing/social features, touchpad and when its launched - Gaikai are doing way more for gaming than XB1

Xb1 focus all along has been on motion, voice control and tv/video services, and I personally hate motion gaming and think it usually makes games worse.

In my opinion, the XB1 is more revolutionary in what a console brings to your living room, rather than what it does for gaming. Let's be honest here, in terms of actual gaming, both consoles are just more powerful versions of the previous generation. Neither one brings anything really revolutionary to the table in terms of how we play our games (considering Kinect and the PS Eye were available last gen as well).

I'd consider the XB1 to be more revolutionary than the PS4 simply because of the media side of things. I know we're lagging behind the US in terms of implementation, but the vision MS have shown is certainly a more rounded package than the PS offers, though of course the PS4 is simply a more powerful gaming machine.

The things I'm looking forward to trying are things like Snap, where I can do two things at once. That's pretty revolutionary for a console. Being able to Snap YouTube to watch a walkthrough of a section I may be struggling with, or browsing Netflix while doing something simple like scouring the transfer market in Fifa. These are features consoles have ever had before, and I can't wait to try them.

Of course, the PS4 does have some great features of it's own, and I'm very much looking forward to trying them. I'm not overly bothered by Gaikai simply because I'm not too bothered by the backwards compatibility features. I also have a relatively slow 6MB connection so any streaming gameplay wouldn't really be good for me. The 360 was BC with a number of games, and I think over the past 8 years I've used it twice. I do like the media sharing though, and I can't wait till I get my PS4 to try it out.

At least the differences between the consoles make it easier to make a choice. If all you want is the most powerful gaming console, get the PS4. If you want something a bit more rounded, at the expense of some power, get the XB1. It's as simple as that IMO.

Edit: One area where I will say the PS4 is way ahead is in terms of remote play via the Vita. That is a fabulous addition if it works properly. Of course, that drives the cost of the console up if you don't already have the Vita, but it's a brilliant feature.

I was watching a Twitch feed of some dude called Exopheres (I think that was his name) and he was playing BF4 streaming live through his new PS4 (he's Canadian). He was telling us that his brother had just recorded some footage of him playing BF4 remotely via his Vita and was rendering/uploading live as he was speaking to us. When the upload was complete he gave us the link so I went and watched it. Really amazing tech and it works really well. He said he was playing 3 floors away from his PS4. Impressive stuff I thought.

Personally I don't see the need for a revolution.

I'd prefer to play games as I already do, sitting comfortably with a pad, not shouting in the direction of my tv and prancing around like billy elliot. Some people have a fascination with the need for it to change...I don't think how we play needs to change at all.

I think if any 'revolution' is to happen it needs to come more so from the games themselves, whilst maintaining the sit-comfortably-with-pad approach. Some fresh ideas and experiences. I don't know what though, I'm not paid to think of that. :)

So from what I've read:

Pretty much the same experience for cross-platform
Kinect is nice, but you still have to talk in machine voice and using the pad is often quicker anyway. Haven't seen anything about the PSeye
PS4 will have better visuals for exclusives
PS4 is cheaper, Xbox will have more additional features
No real flagship titles yet

The Snap feature is revlutionary for a console but Picture In Picture has been available for years on TV's and does exactly the same thing.

Oh I know, but not every TV supports it. I bought a 47" 3D LG TV last year and that doesn't do it, so at least I'll have access to it now.

I'm aware of the risk of stating such a thing so I'll keep it short, but: from evidence so far, the PS4 will have better visuals/performance on cross platform not just exclusives. HOWEVER, wether this is something that bothers you or not is up to you. It's not like it will be PC versus Nintendo 64 difference.

Agreed. It'll also differ from game to game. Something like Call of Duty will be more obvious, but something like NFS the differences will be incredibly minor. Like you said, whether that's important to someone is down to them.

Agreed, for people that suggest that the XO does something significantly more than the PS4, just look at the games both have produced - nothing special about those really and its that experience that really matters (well to gamers I guess, but I cant see why that wouldnt be everyone thats buying it at launch).

I want to see less of current-gen tech with next-gen power and more next-gen tech (i.e. better AI, merging of SP and MP etc...) please - guess thats why I look towards indie/first party developers for those possibilities...

I agree, but I imagine that's only going to happen when they stop making games for current gen as well. Hopefully in the next year or so we'll start to see some true next gen games that give a next gen experience.

I want to see more old-gen (N64, Dreamcast, and PC Quake/ET etc era) gameplay with current gen visuals. No more modern, slow, benny hill fps please!

I want to see next gen Jade Empire, Knights of the Old Republic, Shenmue, Burnout and Ninja Gaiden (a proper one, not like Ninja Gaiden 3). Get them made and I'll be well happy.

Twitch FPS on a controller - no thanks :p. Think just having no auto aim will be a good start now controllers are accurate enough

Why are Sony and Microsoft waiting until 2014 to release their consoles in Japan? In the past it's been the other way around, with Japan getting a new console release over a year ahead of Europe.

Because the console market has really slowed down there, they are mostly handheld gamers these days.

Also Sony has no Japanese games ready for launch (does Knack count?)
