Advise on getting a saturday job?

Apply for supermarkets, McDonalds, KFC, Burger King, Pizza Hut, Dominos, glass collector at a local night club, Holiday Village staff (Cleaning beds, cutting grass etc)

These are the types of job you will be looking at, and if you turn your nose up then you have a big shock in store.

I worked in McDonalds while doing my A-levels back in the day, it was awesome, I met loads of new people my own age from different schools and we had a brilliant time, after work we night clubbing and drinking, it was amazing.

I have applied for one job
You're several dozen jobs off what you should be applying for, and by the way, you may know about PC's but the employer doesn't know you know about PC's.

Just apply everywhere, all the agencies, all the highstreet stores, put in applications left right and centre, phone round the cornershops, the tradesmen and the hotels.

If you think you're going to enjoy your work, you aren't, but if you want the money you'll have to do it.

I always find it funny when people say how little PC World staff know about computing / networking.

They don't want techy nerdy staff, they want people who can hold a conversation and sell insurance services.

All they need to know is a bit more than the majority of their customers (so not much).

Right little rant over (I don't work for them btw just know a store manager)

As for Saturday jobs I'd say try local shops, just pop in and have a chat with the owners. You can try the usual supermarkets etc but 16 is too young for a lot of companies.

Precisely the point; you expect to go there and find people who know about computers!

Pretty much this - But.. you can enjoy work, if you're that way inclined! :p

At your age, its best you just apply anywhere and everywhere. My first job was at Clarks shoes when I was 16/17. I can honestly say, it is not what i'd want to base my career on in the slightest, but it paid well for my age and what I was doing, and it allowed me to buy my own things!

Retail jobs also teach you or at least, expose you to customers. If you're wanting to work in IT eventually, no matter what area of IT you'll have to demonstrate good customer service skillz!

Get an SIA licence and start doing part-time "Stewarding" work for big security companies. You will work stuff like football and local sports events, maybe even concerts.

Or if you feel very, very self-confident and have a very long temper, you will find weekend work on the doors.

I think having a customer facing first job is important, especially if you're naturally introverted like many of us geeks are.

I worked as a waiter and other hospitality roles from 16 to 18. When I compare my friends who did similar jobs to those who worked stacking shelves, wharehouses and other non-customer facing roles, we are doing much better.
Learning how to talk to dimwits and work under high pressure is very valuable.

He won't get very far doing that at 16 considering you need to be at least 18 for licencing and insurance reasons.

I got a job as a lifeguard at my local pool when I was 16, best job I've ever had. Especially in the school holidays you could work every hour going if you wanted and the wimminz love a lifeguard.

No way, I remember a few freaks who enjoyed working retail.

"Oh it's so nice chatting to people all day"

Please, retail is one of the reasons I have like no faith in humanity. Literally none, it was ruined by all the rude/ stupid/ demanding *****s you encounter in retail.

My bad, should have read post better.

I think some stewarding jobs, the ones that don't need a licence, are open at 16yo. But the pay is bad and the job is boring.

So are a lot of the ones you need to be licenced for :p Security work is 90% stood around doing nothing while your brains dribble out of your ears and 10% all go.

Id stay from computer shops and such, Often they will look at any teenager and just say no straight away, Its all about experience really. Try for a job at The co-op or some shop like that

I worked at a co-op. The job itself was poop (obviously stacking shelves isnt that exciting) but a couple of my mates worked there so we had a laugh. Wasn't that bad really. There was always hours going spare to you could make a bit more money if you had the time.
