I've noticed at work that there are quite a few staff members who will take the lift between floors short distance, even if it's only one floor. These are [uncoincidentally] the same people who are rather corpulent.
Likewise there are some people, like myself, who will always take the stairs, even it's several floors up or down.
I wonder how much something like this plays a role in our overall health. I mean, going up a few flights of stairs doesn't burn that many calories, but maybe it's symptomatic of an overall attitude. For instance, I also tend to walk for fifteen minutes between destinations rather than take the bus, whereas some people will take the bus just to go down the road, and I consider myself to be quite healthy. Also, in one of my old jobs I was always on my feet and would take the stairs round a large hospital building every day. I lost nearly a stone in those few weeks.
At one of the stations I regularly interchange at they've just installed a lift between ground and first floor. I now see the same commuters every day wait for the lift between floors, whereas a few weeks ago they were perfectly happy to go up and down the stairs every day. It's just laziness, surely.
So, the question remains, are you a lift or a stairs person? And do you consider yourself quite healthy?
