With regards to the ships themselves, is there any info on the different shields etc. The ship specs just give the name of the shield without any performance data you can compare. The same goes for many of the other ship components.

You can get a sort-of idea based on the max class of the stats.

So if "Max Shield" is 2, it doesn't matter what the shield itself is?

Are you also saying all Class 1 weapons are the same, etc?

I'll add an example:

Aurora MR vs Aurora LX

Both have Max Shield value of 2 but the MR has a "Seal INK-1" shield and the LX a "Gorgon Defender AllStop" shield.

As I understand it, those are the standard items the ship comes with.
So for example: You can put whatever Class 3 shield you want on, but if you have to claim a new ship it will come with the same Gorgon Defender you started with.
Same with the guns, powerplant, etc.

I believe you can upgrade your insurance to cover any items you add, though.
I also understand that LTI also only covers the basic hull and any starting items too, so you'd again need further insurance on any upgrades you install.

Also - say you have max class shield of 3, but it comes with a 2.
You can add a 3, but you may also need a bigger powerplant. Same for the guns - fit a full complement of Class3 guns, but you'll need a bigger powerplant and the biggest max size you can fit may not sufficiently power all the weapons, or burn out much faster.
If fuelling is a factor, then bigger engines will go faster but use more fuel, so you'd have that sort fo thing to consider as well.

It's all the trade-off and player configuration aspects coming in.

I was referring more to being able to tell the difference between 2 items with the same rating but different names e.g. 2 different shields/weapons with the same class rating.

There doesn't seem to be any data on the items beyond a group classification e.g. power output, recharge rate, rate of fire, etc.

In other similar games I've played, ships would have different size slots (like classification) and it'd be up to you to research and acquire the most efficient weapons/shields etc for those slots. All weapons/shields had differences even within the same classification. One Class-1 weapon for example could have a high rate of fire at the expense of energy consumption. A missile could have 100% accuracy at the expense of damage but still consume the same space as a missile that had very different attributes.

As far as I know there's none available as so much is subject to change there's little point

Exactly.
They're still revising the basic ship stats, so I doubt they've really fine-honed the various kit ranges just yet.
Also, we're about to enter the Dogfighting, Alpha and Beta tests, so all this could change... especially if someone like me can manage to own y'all's backsides with an Aurora or something!! :D

I am actually quite interested in the Alpha/Beta access so I guess am looking at the Digital Mercenary package.

Are there any other packages (of the no-brainer variety) I should be considering during this "sale"?

Imy, entirely depends on what you think you'd like to fly. If the Freelancer was on offer I'd suggest it as a solid all-rounder freighter for exploration and trading, but it's sadly not.

The bombers are up at the weekend, likely to be reasonably expensive though but remember there's a long, long time before this game goes live and LTI is really just a bonus, it's not essential as you can purchase insurance in game at a low price.

Think back to every other space sim you've ever played. How long did you continue to use your first ship for?

There is a difference in Star Citizen however, a player can go many lives using the same 'starter' ship as there is no real ship progression. I am sure that you 'could', but there is no reason to..

Well that really depends on what the experience is like of owning other ships and having NPCs control them.

In X3:TC for example I would alternate between a Springblossom (heavy fighter type ship) and a Spitfyre (super fast agile fighter). All my freighters were NPC controlled and I just gave them instructions remotely and setup macros on what to do if attacked (jump and flee).

Either way I'm not looking to spend much beyond the $40 Digital Mercenary package. I'm happy to earn my dream ship (or ships) in-game.

The ship isn't the only thing to consider with these pledge bundles though.

Same here tbh. I don't really see the point in buying xyz ships in advance. I want to be able to grow in the game & see where it takes me.

Well I've bitten the bullet & bought the Digital Mercenary pledge plus the $5 LX upgrade:D

Yup, me too. First time I will have played this style of game so it makes sense to see if I actually like it. Going to play the campaign first with my little entry level ship then join the rough boys with a bit more horsepower if I like it.

I believe anything you earn in the campaign carries over to multi-player IF you use the official servers

Yup, I think this is true. At least I stand a chance of not getting battered to pieces if I don't just jump straight in!

During the single player campaign will there be an opportunity to get into a better/different ship and if so, will that ship carry over to the official multiplayer servers?

Probably not.
You are serving in the military, flying whatever ship they provide.

However, you will muster out at the end and how well/badly you do will help decide how much money you have afterward, along with things like your reputation, associations, perhaps even friends and contacts you have made.
Certainly you can be promoted (CR himself confirmed this one).

But yeah, do well and you'll enter civvy street (or rather Citizen street) with some dosh. Maybe enough to buy yourself a starter ship.
Do badly and you'll have to find work, like crewing someone else's ship, just to earn yourself some basic credits.
