Hi guys, after a bit of help.

My son has £200 to spend on a new graphics card but I am unsure of which to tell is best for him.

I am gunna give him my i5 3570k married to 8 gig RAM.

I have drawn a list up of three.

He wants to play Battlefield 4. Will any of these do the job.

His screen is a TV with a couple of HDMI and PC in has full 1080p.

The top\first one reads well and has good reviews plus it would look good on his blue Asus mobo. ( it has to look good as well as perform )

Cheers

I would advice you to get the cheapest 280X or 7970 you can find.

Given that the 7950s are at £210 here, makes sense.

Thanks for that reply.

I had a look round the site and saw this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-422-OE

It is the game he wants, the spec of the CPU and RAM are similar and the graphics card goes for a R9 280X.

Looking at them the cheapest one

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-091-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1842

So is this worth the few extra pounds ? £40 over his budget, which he gave himself but I know he has a bit more he could spend.

Would any of the cheaper one run a new top end game or is that just false economy, is the extra money really worth spending ?

Update...

Going to order the Gigabyte R9 280 X.

Checked his billy no make PSU. Totally not up to the job so gunna treat him to
a nice Cirsair PSU.

A RM 750.

Also gunna let him sort of have my i5 3570K married with my Corsair H100.

Damn now I need new things.... :D

sounds like you are passing things along so you can upgrade your system? ;P

good choice with the 280X, makes a lot more sense than a 7950

I had a similar discussion on a PSU to go with a 280X over at http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18558532, managed to talk me out of the RM 750 I also was going to go for (I'm a fan of corsair stuff too)
I'm now going for the Seasonic 550w gold instead, on sale this week to also, pretty sure I read somewhere Seasonic make/made some of the corsair PSU's...

Also some one also stated that "Corsair released a statement saying there's a fault with the 750 + 850w version of the RM power supply causing it to shutdown in high ambient temperatures as the fan doesn't switch on." (I've not verified this though.)

That problem sounds worrying.

The bits are ordered and paid for.

If that does happen I feel their warrenty will stand, I will make sure I keep all reciepts etc, just in case.

Thanks for the info.

I have just Googled " Corsair RM750 problem"

Found this

http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=123484

It does worry me. I think I will contact OC UK. And ask if they have had any units returned do o this problem.

I may evn ask for a different unit before it is dispatched.

They have been fine, but if your really worried go with a BeQuiet 850W, exceptional units and roughly same price. :)

I have just sent this to OC UK

Hi OC UK

Just last night i placed an order or a GPU and a PSU.

Since ordering I have found inormation regarding the PSU and a particular problem with the Corsir RM 750 and how the fan does not switch on causing the PC to shut down.

This is worrying me. I would like to ask if infact you are aware of this matter ?
What are the options I have. Is it infact too late for you to dipatch a different PSU.
I would ask that if a different PSU can be sent then it would need to be at least 750 W unit with two 8 pin GPU connectors or two 6+2 pin onnectors.
It would need to an equally priced unit and one with an eually good name.

If this is not possible can I ask where I would stand if the Corsair unit was affected. I hope a full refund or replacement unit would be dipatched at no extra cost to me.

The poblem was mentioned within the OC UK Forums and on this site

http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=123484

Having looked for an alternative unit I have seen the following units

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-042-SS

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-017-SS&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2383

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-202-CM&tool=3

The first one would be my prefered option but is slightly over my oiginal payment. I could and would be willing to pay the difference.

I do hope you can help me in this matter.

If you feel the need to contact me by phone please do so.
