330d?

you only live once..

We are talking about buying a diesel BMW not taking a career break to trek the Amazon rainforest.

Though its the most silly phrase ever, you only live once but you live for a very long time in which you can buy many cars.

Personally if the running costs are not an issue or you can have a decent reserve fund then... buy a 330i instead. If low cost running is your thing, buy neither. The older they get the less sense the diesels make.

you only live once..

That phrase is not really applicable to a thread discussing £8k, 85000 mile, diesel, Pre-LCI, E90 3 Series'. :p

Now, if we were discussing an £8k E39 M5 or E46 M3 - that phrase is very applicable ;)

EDIT: lol, beaten by Fox - who has taken the phrase much more literally than I think was intended. :p

I'm looking at getting a new car, and the BMW 330D seems to be quite a nice looking and efficient car.. Is there anything I need to know?

I'm looking at THIS one or THIS one in particular.. I don't have much knowledge at all, so I'm hoping Fox or someone will either tell me to put up or shut up :D Price reasonable? That kinda mileage OK? £8k is max budget.

EDIT: If you know any better..? Must be automatic, ideally diesel.. Black or dark grey with xenon headlights preferred :P

Neither of those you posted have Xenon headlights :p

I think you're asking a bit much here, all in the name of "status".. Who is going to care anyway

I drove an old Renault Megane when I was 18 and then an old Honda Accord when I was about 20. My friends all thought they were decent, because they were so much better and more well-equipped than the cars they had. What do all your friends drive, if they're going to make fun of a Skoda Superb?

The phrase relates to money.

You live once, you have the money and can afford the purchase right now. Down the line this may not be the case and all he may be able to afford is a bus pass.

Throw away your idea of paying a premium for driving a BMW and you'll suddenly get a LOT more for your money. The Superb is smashing.

Jeez Fox try saying that to a friend of mine who had a brain heamorage at 38 and is now a cabbage for the rest of his life. I was just stating that if it's the car he really wants then go for it, that's what I would do.

That's my opinion and advice if you don't like it suck eggs son ;)

I think it's very poor advice you have offered and has no relevance to your friend, you seem to be clutching at straws. Decent advice elsewhere though, my taxi driver has a superb and it's a really comfortable.

It is more likely than not that he will continue to be able to buy such cars as he gets older.

Anyway I am not saying don't, I am saying do it if the costs are not a big deal and thus do it with a 330i. I would be a hypocrite to suggest different.

My contribution to your thread.

Stinking diesel mode [ON] OFF
This or you get the idea, tonnes of these great examples to choose from.

Lovely petrol mode [ON] OFF
This or again, you get the idea, plenty of smaller engined great example variants to choose from.

You're welcome

You should probably just buy this instead. Better hurry, you could be dead with ass cancer three times already by tomorrow.

Forget the status thing. You've only got £8k to spend - why tie a good amount of this up in the badge?

Skoda Octavia/Superb
Seat Exeo
Vauxhall Insignia
Ford Mondeo

Those make much more sense for your budget.

I can only echo what has been said here- getting a **** spec 330d purely for the brand is a waste of money.

Have you considered a Volvo?
Worth considering an S60 or S80 IMHO.

Thanks everyone for all the advice, I've taken it all on board and looking round as possible alternatives too! No doubt I'll be back here soon with more questions :)
