Off to buy a Land Rover Discovery 3 tomorrow

Forgive my ignorance here, but why would you buy one of these over a Range Rover Vogue/Vogue SE/Autobiography? They command similar money, but the Range Rover is clearly a much nicer car both in and out? Both are good off road, both are great towing vehicles, they do exactly the same task.

FWIW I bought a 2005 Range Rover Autobiography for this kind of money with only one previous owner, FLRSH, etc.

I'd imagine running costs are significantly more on a RR?

Certainly not larger, but yes it does have a 7 seat option although the OP doesn't mention that requirement.

Running costs I cannot imagine are massively different? They both have auto boxes connected to transfer boxes, permanent 4wd, similar engines, similar electronics, etc.
 
Well I'm on the way to look! It seems like a great example from all the emails etc.

The extra money I'm willing to spend due to it being HSE 7 seat option with full LR History and warranty plus 12 months MOT on it already! I will then take out a further warranty once this runs out! £400 for a major cover warranty I think I'd be stupid not to!

I do get some funny looks when I go and see these cars though! Being 25 I oftern get the .... Wtf you can't have one of these. :(

No 400 quid warranty is likely to be worth the paper it's written on for one of these.

I can't see past the potential problems and any sort of warranty to make me feel happier.

I think the best option is to get the V8 petrol version, which limits you to probably less than 50 vehicles available nationwide at any one time under £20k.

I don't know why I think this, but I believe that it is the same engine out of the X5, but Fox could confirm I'm sure. Fuel economy genuinely isn't much below that of the diesel, and the reduced engine complexity and fuel cost must end up bringing them close on overall running costs.

pretty sure the engines originated from ford. the v8 petrol engine MPG is woeful too.

The 2.7 V6 in the D3 is the same one that went in the Jag Oil burner on the Top Gear 'ring episode, so yep thats fair.

I don't really think the Petrol is that far behind the diesel for MPG. When you then consider fuel costs and the complexity of the diesel engine (Turbo etc)... over the duration, I'd imagine it is about the same costs.

Not necessarily, previous owner paid £450 for warranty on the LS430 from warrantydirect.

They paid for a wheel bearing, 2 lambda sensors, a pcv valve and a cam sensor , all took place at the dealer.

Most people simply don't play to the correct rules with keeping their car fully serviced at a vat garage, and following their very simple and straightforward claim rules.

I seriously doubt it mate, the boot on the RR is absolutely colossal. I got a full height full width American fridge in mine :eek:

The V8 petrol is the same as the RR, its the jaguar 4.4 AJ-V8. MPG is woeful but as you say, at least you then don't need to worry about its reliability.
 
Go for a pathfinder I had one for two years and it never missed a beat. Great to drive full of toys much better value the family loved it :)

The disco 3 dash let's it down for me, it's such a terrible design! Plus the horror stories are endless!

Because the LS430 is a reliable car and it's warranty premium reflects that. WD won't offer a top level warranty on a Disco 3 for £450 I'd imagine, it will be somewhat more.

Actually it was the mid one because the mileage was higher.

major top level cover is £600 per year
