I really don't know much about motherboards, I was wondering what the difference was betwen these two boards. I know the EVO has firewire, and a few more USB ports, but I can't work out much else. Is there anything to justify the £25 price difference?

M5A97 has 4+2 power phase and evo has 6+2. if you have a 6 core or an 8 core fx or even a 6 core phenom, very worth getting the Evo. These high power chips will pull a lot of power through the VRMs and the extra VRMs on the Evo will help deliver constant power, stably and are less likely to throttle your CPU due to overheating.
