Failure to go on school trip is now racist!

Nope. However all the foreigners and segregated households need to be educated on how to fit in and put Britain first. Else what's the point letting them in if they just wanna crap all over our law, culture etc etc?

Don't you have to do one of those tests before they give you citizenship any more?

Religious education is a fantastic thing if it's done right. I went to a fantastic non-denomination school and we learnt a great deal about all different religions and their beliefs and we were actually encouraged to make up our own minds. I thought this was the norm when I was growing up.

However, after moving to Glasgow and being in a relationship with a Glaswegian; I've discovered that my experience couldn't have been further from the norm in this area. From what she's told me, any belief system other than Catholicism was shunned and criticised and she has little to no understanding about Hinduism/Judaism/Islam/etc. I was honestly surprised when I found out that the extent of her RME classes was essentially bible study. Whereas in my school we learnt all about the major religions, from a self confessed Atheist, as well as learning about the major philosophers and being encouraged to discuss and debate.

There needs to be a fundamental shift, and saying that we shouldn't study other beliefs is not where the shift should go. Religion deserves its criticism but it's very much a worthy area of study. Religion is a massive thing in the world and our society, like it or not, and we ought to be teaching our youngsters about it but at the same time ensuring that debate is there. It does rile me whenever anyone seems to question a religious issue they are branded a racist. It's a shame.

But yea, Glasgow is very backwards when it comes to RME.

Good post Ahleckz...RE should exactly be about teaching a broad spectrum of beliefs, philosophical ideas and religions...without prejudice.

Why do they?

The classic tetrad of: obesity, horrid expression/ugliness, unkemptness and lack of any attempt at properly presenting themselves in public.

They could be earning more than you and living in nice housing.

Wealth, or lack of, has nothing to do with chaviness.

Stupid thing to say and it doesn't mean they are racists just because they went to the papers with this story.

Never implied they were...

That's probably because your parents sent you to a Christian school (probably because they are generally better).

I went to a non-denominational school. Despite the name you are still expected to attend church (church of scotland) at easter and christmas, sing hymns at assembly and suffer infrequent visits from the local minister.

The local catholic school may or may not have been worse.

I can't get my head around why everyone is so annoyed by this. Yes, the racial discrimination bit is somewhat OTTP. But, the reason why the chap has done this is because all these white parents have seen that it's a trip about Islam, and automatically decided that their children shouldn't be going, which is just outrageous and idiotic. The best thing you can do as someone who is against a religion, or all religions, is to be educated about that religion.

You cannot punish an 8 year old child based on their parents actions. That would be very silly. Maybe I am guilty of speeding, even though I cant drive, because my dad got a ticket once?

Deuteronomy 24:16
Ezekiel 18:20

GD is hilariously predictable at times. A secular community school threatens to label 8 year old children as racist if they don't attend a workshop on Islam, and GD reckons the biggest problem is CofE Schools ramming hymns down children's throats, despite the fact anyone born in the last 30 years could have gone to a secular school if their parents had wanted them to.

People should remember that until the mid-19th century, unless you were extremely rich you didn't go to school at all. When the public started demanding education for their kids it was the Church (mainly the Anglican communion) who was prepared to get off their backsides and start providing schools for children from less well off backgrounds.

No, but the children should just go. It's not about the punishment, which I've already said is ridiculous. It's about the parent's attitude.

Are you on about the OP or have I missed something?
If you are on about the OP then it is nothing to do with the parents wanting their children go to an Explore Islam day but about the blackmail in the letter.
If you can't get your head around it then it's because you haven't read it correctly.

I'd also like to add that no Muslims were involved in the OP and it was all down to a stupid white British woman making her own rules up.

I've always considered Religious Studies to not be about making you believe in a certain religion, more about educating you about the various ones people follow so that if you need to, you can better understand those people and what/how they tend to think when it comes to said religion.

I don't see how said knowledge can be a bad thing.

I'm afraid my attitude would be similar if I received such a letter from my sons school. The implied threat is inappropriate and if the trip is compulsory then the costs should be borne by the school, and this is besides the threat of putting such a negative (and erroneous) mark on a child's permanent record if they did not attend.

The Head-teacher should be censured at the least. I would be more than annoyed had I received such a letter, and it has nothing to do with the trips subject matter at all, but the way in which the school acted.

Ignorant of myths and legends? Lol, I think it's safe to take our chances on that one.
There's nothing inherently wrong with learning about the myths and legends that have been such a prominent feature of our past. Do I believe any of it? Not at all, but it's a bit strange to have no knowledge of religious practices whatsoever.
