Long version.

My Mum found a wallet while out with her mate and left it to me to get it to the Police or return it.
I rang the Police to give the blokes name Dr T***** M******* and I even had an address but couldn't get there and stupidly asked if the Police could call for it.
Basically bring it in or wait for a phone call from the Doctor.
I then rang Barclays Bank and eventually got to talk to a real person who took my details and phone number and said they would contact the Doctor.
About 16:40 he rang me so I told him not to worry and he doesn't need to cancel his cards etc but don't come yet because of football traffic.
He never came so I thought nothing of it until the Police woke me up at 9am this morning and inferred I had stolen it
I pointed to it on the table and reminded them that I had made 2 phone calls to Longton Police Station - the first time with my Mums details because she had found it and then the second time when I took it home because I didn't want people bothering her (79 with a 24/7 oxygen cylinder in tow).
I told them I had spoken to Dr M and he was going to come down and get it.
They rang back to base to confirm my two telephone calls and just said there's obviously been a mistake and went
I'm sitting here wanting to ring the Doctor and pull him apart or at least tomorrow email him from my works address asking him why he rang the Police (we work at the same place).

Short version
Accused of knicking a wallet.

It was a mistake. I'm not sure what else can be gained from this. Police can only go on the information they have which is often sketchy at best. You gave them an account which they were happy with and left.

If it had no money in just bin it, anyone with a bit of common sense would have cancelled the cards in there straight away. Not worth the hassle.

edit: if he carrying a £1000 pound card he's a dumb ass too.

Yes and they also pointed to a card in it that would cost him £1000 to replace.
It was a card to do with his right to live and work in this country.
They charge £1000 to replace the card? Seems a bit odd that his right to live and work is a piece of plastic rather than some kind of official documentation or record with the authorities.

What was the point of the call to Barclays if you had already contacted the police?

Use your brain.
The Police weren't interested, they just logged it and didn't even ask for his address.

And in reply to somebody else - until Barclays rang him he thought his wallet was at his mates.

and this is why folks I give 0 F's about stuff like this. Oh a wallet? Not my problem.

This guy did every thing by the book, wasted hours of his time and gets called a thief as a way of saying "thanks".

The thing is we had a good talk on the phone about what his expertise was and what I did. I'm hoping that this is something to do with Barclays although I still don't understand why he didn't come at 6pm last night as arranged. Perhaps he panicked.

Forgot to mention there was also £82 in the wallet so it wasn't a case of binning it.
There was also a total of 28 cards in it including Driving License, NHS SmartCards, other bank cards, shop cards and the special card.
It was a very thick wallet and when I first opened it every card fell out :)

It will be a Biometric Residence Permit. Cost to replace is £38. There will obviously be records held by the Home Office as well.

Not sure where the £1000 comes from, although iirc failure to report a loss can result in prosecution which carries a maximum penalty of a £1000 fine.

Perhaps his imagination ran away with him and he asked the police to collect it without any more of an explanation than "This guy has my wallet."

I guess it makes little difference but I would still be calling him to ask him why he didn't show and instead had the police call round to accuse me of being a thief.

His being uncomfortable with the situation seems reasonable, his handling of it does not.

Perhaps it was found in a place he shouldn't have been and needed to report it stolen to cover up for something.

That would also imply Dimple's mother was hanging out there too ;)

Ha, I was just thinking the same thing, but perhaps it was more the thought that it might have been close by to his sister-in-law or some such thing that he would have got into hot water over.
