780/780 ti fast enough for 1440p?

Thinking about selling my Crossfire 7950's as I am having a few headaches with crossfire support in games (i.e. some games it just plain doesn't work!) and they can get noisy together.

Would a 780 or 780 ti be quick enough to do 1440p res at decent frame rates on the latest games?

I would imagine that crossfire 7950's might be a bit quicker overall when crossfire works. Should be able to get back about £280 towards a 780 by selling my 7950's.

If you want to run everything on max, I'd imagine the 780 might struggle a little on some of the newest games. However, the 780ti would do the job.

just gone from 7970 crossfire to a 290, im using a 1400p monitor so would be able tell you more how it copes in a few days

I use a single 780 at 1200/1750 for 1440p and I find it more than enough. You're looking at around 25-35% slower than crossfire 7950s (assuming decent scaling).

If you knock off MSAA 4x which personally I find overkill for this resolution then you'll have excellent performance. MSAA 2x is OK in most games.

I've had crossfire 7950s and a 780 and compared them both while overclocked so that 25-35% hasn't been plucked from my backside .

Out of interest guys what was your driver for going to 780/290 over Crossfire 7950's? same as mine with driver support/heat/noise?

I guess you can turn down AA a little to still maintain decent frame rates on newer games.

waiting for my 290 to be deliverd any minute so cant say, but i would say for high res moitors dont get hung up on fps, if it looks nice and plays nice without slowdown then thats good enough for me i uninstalled fraps when i had eyefinity and not botherd with it since

Some games will be fine with 4x MSAA as well. Depends on the game really.

Having a card with decent resale value (7950s were plummeting at the time I sold)

I didn't have a single problem with my 7950s so I was in a slightly different scenario to you.

yep my 7970's were fine apart from cod ghosts but i played that fine on a single 7970 on 1400p, just needed a new toy to play with

I'm surprised how much of an increase sli 780 TI's provide over sli 780's. Also how low sli 780's score in some games like metro at 1440p.

Just. If you want lots of multisampling and general AA then one card might just fall short of the mark.

From 2 7950s went to a single factory overclocked GTX780 and not going to look back.

It it can pull 60fps+ at 1080p & 1440p at max settings, no need to spend money over a Ti tbh. What would be better investment, is to spend 30-40 and get a 650ti to do the physx.

Or any similar clocked 780 will perform like that. While most can do 1200+ easily.

I went from GTX 670 2GBs to GTX 780 3GBs and I personally think people way underestimate the power of the cards and what is actually used and/or needed in 1440p.
The games I play in 2560x1440 my GTX 670 2GB cards had no problems with, moving to GTX 780 3GB it's the same - everything just runs a bit faster. Crysis 3, Skyrim with loads of tex' mods, Far Cry 3, Hitman Absolution just to name a few.

I know the new popular boy is GTX 780 Ti, but if memory is your concern you won't do any better with that card than 780. As for performance... well when 780 starts to struggle then 780Ti will follow shortly !
That's why I'm waiting for 780Ti 6GB to arrive, then I'll hand out my 780's for two of those.

My single 7970 copes very well @ 1440p, as did the 670 I had before it. Id imagine a 780 will be more than fine
