How long to charge a credit card for a purchase?

Bit miffed at this one, I purchased something on the 11th May and was only charged for it on the 18th November. Subsequently, I have purchased a couple of items since from the same retailer and they too have have been charged on the 18th November.

I'm trying to figure out if I have been double billed, but I don't think I have been.

The annoying thing is that I was charged to a credit card I no longer use, I was very lucky to spot this before missing the payment and being fined for this.

So how long does a retailer have to charge my credit card? This seems like an unreasonable amount of time to take the payment and I was not informed of any delays etc via email.

Did you not get a detailed statement? How could you have been fined if this only went through a few days ago?

Very very odd for the retailer not to charge you immediately also how have they put the payment through? Did they have your PIN, or did you pay customer not present and they have re-input your details at a later date? Or, which makes more sense, has you credit card company done something to delay the payment till now ie on hold for suspected fraud? (guess this depends what you have been buying..... :D)

So I went logged in to that credit card by chance, it's not a card I use every day so I could quite easily have gone months without checking it. I also switched off paper statements like every bank encourages you to do!

surely it has to be billed within a month like everthing ive ever bought on a credit card?

I'm sure there must be some kind of time limit, I think over 6 months is unreasonable personally. I will pay, but equally I will send a complaint as it nearly cost me money.

It was an online purchase, I used the same card for each transaction.

Always check your statements!

Always.
If you don't check your statement things like this can happen, but even more seriously you could also have had someone out there buying diamonds, gold, and hookers on your card for the past few months.

IIRC they have something like a year+ to charge the card but good practice is to do is as soon as it's sent.

I do check for things that have been charged, but it's not always possible to check for things that haven't yet been charged.

I use my credit card for personal use and work expenses, I have a lot going through every month so it's extremely difficult to keep on top of it, especially for things that haven't been charged.

My card company advised me that the company has 1 year to take the payment but said it was very poor practice to take it after 6 months as generally the payment should be taken much sooner.

Good business practice -3 business days for online authorised transactions and 30 days manual card entry.

As long as you received the goods ok then you do not have any recourse for delayed processing.

If the account was closed, then your bank would chargeback the transaction for late presentment, but as the account appears to be open, then there is nothing you can do.

I know this from 12 years Chargeback experience.
