yesterday i picked up a asus rt-n66u to replace the superhub which is not just in modem mode, i quickly set it up using the cd and didnt touch any of the settings. i did however update the firmware to 3.0.0.4.374.720.

im connected wireless on 5ghz.

this morning ive been playing wow and cant get a good ping, its around 300 where as before the router it was under 50 all the time.

are they any settings i should change to improve performance?

pings to router and 8.8.8.8

ran pingtest.net, it fails on packet loss and 5ms jitter.

im now running the latest firmware also on the router.

I found I had to use the latest Merlin FW to get the best stability and performance out of the router - also try disabling QoS if you've enabled it as there are a few broken settings in it and unless you understand them it tends to produce undesireable effects :( and actually kills performance for some gaming traffic when it shouldn't.

EDIT: I still suspect some wifi issues with the router though - a small number of devices get gradually degraded performance over a day or so) until web browsing is very noticeably slow and throughput all over the place and often barely dialup speeds and is only sorted by rebooting both the router and the device for some reason.

Mine is running Firmware 3.0.0.4.260 and its been absolutely faultless both on cable and wireless with 10+ wifi devices in the house.

Firewall is on, not using any QoS features as it seems to handle that anyway even if one person is maxing out the line downloading.

Uptime 279 days 17 hours 32 minutes 30 seconds :)

Those latency spikes of > 1000ms won't help. There is probably some sort of interference occurring.

there is one wall between my pc and the router and im using 5ghz wifi.

the problem happens on both bands though.

there are no problems wired to the router. so im gonna try the merlin firmware tomorrow.

IS IT deffo worth using tomato or merlins? I have stock still

I can recommend Merlin. New features, fuxes (some of which Asus have backported to their own firmware), whilst keeping the look and feel of the original. He's sometimes hamstrung by stuff that is in closed sourced modules and is just transferred direct from the official firmware, but it's a general improvement all over.

i have discovered the problem, my Edimax N600 wireless adapter.

im using my onboard wifi and its fine. its only 2.4ghz but i have the problem on either band using the edimax.

im downloading new drivers now to see if it fixes the problem,.

I found Merlin's FW was a big improvement in both performance and stability if you have multiple users hammering the connection - probably not so needed if your the sole user and/or 1-2 light users. Was having to reboot the router every couple of days on stock firmware :( between torrents and server browser refetches and other stuff with heavy connection cycling it was killing it - with Merlin FW I rarely need to reboot it for months at a time.
