GTX 780 vs 7990 vs R9 290

The majority of reviews show the 7990 louder than the 780/titan.

To put it short, the Radeon HD 7990 is a noisy graphics card.

My 7990 was definitely not what I would call quiet! It's not loud either but audible under load. My 290's well...you can imagine :p

Ehm no its not. In that Xbit link you posted they have 1.5v going through the card in the bottom picture. Also the card is at 90c the fan kicks up louder then because the card is close to the throttling limit. Something wrong if your card is up at that temp. Fact is the card runs at a similar temp and noise to a titan/780. I can't even hear it running while gaming thats how quiet it is. If one is hot and noisy, so is the other because they're so close you can't label one without the other.

Funny results you posted there from Anand. I have some from Toms that show the 7990 at 41db while gaming. Comfortably quieter than the titan at 51db. Regardless what it comes down to is they're basically the same or at least extremely similar. Enough that if you label one hot and has a loud fan you have to label the other the same.

The worst thing about the Toms results is the coil whine their card has which is pretty bad. I guess that counts towards the DB limit.

I played BF4 for 2 hours last night with a tweaked bios on my 7990.

Quiet as hell, max temp 72c, I appear to be lucky as mine doesn't whine at all.

It's all BS,
I don't trust a single damn online review regardless of the reputation of the site,
Much easier to get the card into your system and check it yourself, i did, @55 fan speed my 290X was around 35db while in my case and the Db device placed where i sit.

Even if i didn't have the ability to check the Dbs..

I've got myself a MKII "Mrs" sitting 4 Ft away from, her ears tuned into any annoying sounds while she gets here soaps fix. If the card was as loud as people make it out to be, i'd be the first to know about it, via a drop kick to the family jewels.

You can either take the words of people using them here or paid review sites. The card is silent on auto fan, unless you have really bad coil whine. The hexus link posted shows the 7990 7c cooler than a titan and the fan speed would be so slow at that temp you would not hear it even with your head in the fcase. Perhaps some of their cards had bad coil whine, which accounts for the loud DB. As we all know with 7990's most of them have a little bit but i guess a few are quite bad. It disappears completely though after some usage. My first one needed one day of usage to remove coil whine. The 7990 is no more hot or a noisy air cooler than any reference titan/780.

GTX780 was for me, coming from 2 7950s.

Superb performance (at least the PNY XLR8 OC), quiet at factory overclock, which is more sufficient.

However I see no point to overclock it more atm.any game that I do not use the 3d vision getting more than 80fps. (WOT with everything max is 80-120fps)

While playing BF BC2 at ~70fps with 3d vision on is totally insane. Considering there is no noise!!!!!!!

I'd never go multi gpu (AMD or Nvidia) for experiences like this: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/call_od_duty_vga_graphics_performance_benchmark,7.html

Sometimes the support won't be there to fully utilise both GPUs.

You know why don't you?

It should be clear by now that NVIDIA is all over this release

No doubt AMD were blocked as they were with the recent Batman game from providing performance enhancements until the last minute. The driver used in the Guru3d tests was Beta 9. Beta 9.1 has this in the release notes.

You said it's quieter than a titan/780 by going by a paid review site.

Well it was marginally in a few links i posted. You posted a few links showing it marginally the other way. Its safe to say they're pretty similar. If one is hot and loud, so is the other when the differences are so small.

I would agree aside from how noisy a card is as people are very subjective when it comes to what is an acceptable level of noise. I would trust review sites to tell me how loud a card is relative to other cards running the same test.

Matt, why would they be blocked by Nvidia? Are the Green teamers that bad that anything AMD don't get optimized/right, it is Nvidia's fault?

BF4 is poor with constant RSOD for people and "stopped working" errors and this is because AMD, no doubt blocked Nvidia from this.

I agree Matt, and I think I made it clear my post wasn't Nvidia vs AMD, but these things will happen, crap as it is.

I also can't be bothered with the increased level of faffing that seems to be required to get games to work at times.

If you read the link i posted Greg it comes from a major hardware reviewer in France. Wouldn't be the first time Nvidia get up to these sleazy antics which hurt the gaming community. Anyway i won't go there now as this thread is already getting way off track. Lets just say they have plenty of previous.

Yeah it does suck mate. Tbf though its very rare to find any decent game that doesn't work on crossfire these days. The problems only generally come from RTS type games now and they generally affect both sides. Sometimes TWIMTBP titles have rather poor multi gpu scaling though and i can't really think of any gaming evolved titles that have scaling issues.

With cards like the R9 290 / 290X and the GTX 780 / 780ti. I really don't see why anyone would opt to go multi GPU, even if dual card support is better than it has been in the past. Single GPU offers best experience, not to mention less noise / heat / power use, and those cards can handle resolutions people game at, 1080P / 1440P just fine.

A single R9 290 that can unlock or even if it doesn't is an ideal GPU. If you want Nvidia the 780's are becoming better and better in price all the time.

Funny you should mention COD Ghosts

"Nvidia’s Fur Tech adds high-quality, realistic, dynamically-reacting fur to Riley, NPC wolves, and multiplayer attack dogs. Do note that AMD users are able to enable this Fur tech"

See Nvidia can play nice :)

Thats a step in the right direction at least. :)

However the line that followed quickly reminded me why i generally just avoid TWIMTBP titles these days.

"Nvidia’s GPU-accelerated PhysX effects, on the other hand, are exclusive to its cards"

Naw i wanted smoke as well as fur. :p

I always said be wary of those French reviewers Matt. Never trust anyone who eats snails and has a string of onions around his neck :D

And to be fair, if I was staunch at supporting AMD, I would cut my nose off to spite my face and not play any TWIMTBP titles as well. :p
