A man has quit his job at a pizza chain in protest at an "offensive" sign banning staff from using languages other than English while at work.

Stuart Horton from Preston had worked at Domino's Pizza in Ashton as a delivery driver for five years.

The sign, which he said was in a staff area, threatened disciplinary action and said speaking other languages could be seen as bullying or harassment.

Domino's said it was "a little strong" but "a common language is vital".

Mr Horton said: "My friends from different countries like India, Pakistan, Poland and Hungary also took offence to this (sign)."

Lynn Collins, regional secretary of the North West Trade Union Congress, said: "This is an employer who took on these staff, employed them knowing they were multi-lingual, and what a tremendous shame it is that they don't see the advantage to having a multi-lingual workforce in an area as diverse as the Preston community."

'Workplace bullying'

The sign read: "All staff. Whilst you are working at this store you must speak in English.

"This if for ease of communication, safety and due to some complaints from staff at other stores.

"Anybody ignoring this could find disciplinary procedures followed, as it could be seen as a form of workplace bullying/harassment."

In a statement, Domino's Pizza said: "To ensure a good flow of communication in our stores, the use of a common language is spoken at work to avoid confusion and to create a more welcoming environment.

"It is also paramount that all safety aspects are adhered to and for this reason a common language is vital.

"The tone of the poster shown is a little strong and we will be picking this up with the franchisee."

- Personally I think Dominos are in the right here

1) Staff/Co-Workers from an English background will feel excluded from the team
2) Customers who overhear conversations spoken in other languages may feel "intimidated"

Thoughts???

We used to allow only English in front of customers and around other English staff. When in washroom or out back its up to them doesn't hurt anyone.

I must admit whenever I hear a language I don't speak I'm always paranoid its aimed at me haha.

Meh I see both sides. I understand why people wish to use tHeir native language however I think there comes a point where it's rude.

They used tell the british pakistani's to speak english where i worked in britain. Don't see anything wrong with it. unless your a leftie do gooder that thinks people should be able to babble on in a foreign language and you dont even know if they are talking about you.

So? That's their problem, why would anyone be intimidated by someone speaking a different language!?

In my opinion, the shop is in the right, simple test; if you went to live and work in France/Germany/Italy/Japan/etc. would you expect to be able to speak English all the time, or accept that you would be expected to speak the local language?

Media hype.

The below average IQs(poor basis sorry) will hear a foreign language and instantly think terrorist plot. Hence intimidated.

However I do agree the problem is theirs.

because people are paranoid as you can see from some of the responses. Personally I don't give a **** but I can see both sides of the coin and agree with Dominos, if it was Maric's takeaway I wouldn't care if staff were speaking in Polish.

Quits because he took offence to a rule brought in because someone took offence to someone talking in a language they didn't understand.

I'm deeply offended by the stupidity of everyone involved.

I work with a lot of Eastern European people and some of our management try to get them to speak in English when around English people, out of courtesy if nothing else.

Whenever the speak their own language around me I must admit I am not a fan but I ignore it.

I don't see the problem, the shop is after all, in England.

If I went to work abroad I wouldn't expect to talk in English, I'd expect to have to learn the language.

Seriously, you don't understand?

Persons employed can 100% communicate in english, and obviously do so with customers, but talk to each other in their native language.

Butt hurt little englander thinks they're saying bad things about him because of his small penis and raises a complaint, similar small penis managers implement the frankly ridiculous policy.

I think it's disgusting, stupid, and a clear warning that care in the community does not, has not and never will work.
