Would a 780ti be sufficient for 1440p 60fps+

I've ran 1440p @ 120hz for the last 18 months on a 670 and for the majority of games it was fine at the highest settings without an AA. Usually a FXAA is all you need to get rid of jaggies at 1440.

For the few that did struggle with keeping above 80fps (min I can handle without going nuts) i'd just drop quality down a bit or lower the res but without scaling.

1920x1440 (4:3) was a great res for some games as you still had 1:1 pixels and better performance.

If games are playable with a 670 at 1440p then a 780ti should be fine.

But then you look at what Gregster posted above and some will deffinitly fall short if running Max settings.

You'd be getting 40something average, which for some is fine, for others no good :)

this is why i say dont get hung up on fps, for single player gaming i would rather play at 40 fps with all the eye candy on as long as the game is not slowing down, sure for multiplayer i would proberly knock the settings down a bit to increase framerates, i just used crysis 3 as an example because its the most demanding game i own

At absolutely full settings @1440p with my OC 780 Lightning (which is around the same as a 780ti i guess) I get around 25-30fps in Crysis 3, 25-30fps in Metro games, like 60-70fps in Bioshock Infinite and 50-60fps on BF4.

At 1440p completely maxed out settings are not required, like 2xMSAA is enough as the pixel count is so great anyway so take some unnecessary settings off and your jumping another 10fps without the lose of shineyz. Tessellation will also mess with your FPS on nVidia as its not fully supported.

Crysis 3 for example is very CPU intensive so a 4770k or the likes will help there.

I ran this at 1080P as well as 1440P and the game felt better but still not that responsive. (move quickly and you can feel it).

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
41771, 841079, 35, 79, 49.664

So 49 fps average at 1080P and 30 fps average at 1440P. I would say to the OP that a Titan with a good clock can't maintain 31 fps at 1440P, therefore a 780Ti will not either and possibly SLI 780Ti's will struggle :)

Old Gamer, I think you are not playing with the game maxed on your 290X.

I'm a sucker for good visuals so will want the game maxed out where possible, think I'm edging towards 1080p now. Shame though as I will go TN panel which is not as exciting as an overclockable IPS/PLS.

A single 780ti isn't really worth it in my opinion, it's barely faster than a 780 and still won't max games out at 1080p. If you want consistently good results at 1440p you're going to need SLI/Crossfire. Two custom cooled 290s would do brilliantly.

I have an Asus VG278H 120Hz 1080P monitor and right next to it, I have a Dell UltraSharp U2713HM 1440P monitor. I can't tell the difference in image quality over the 1080P. The colours do look a little deeper but I don't like input lag that you get from V-Sync in games like BF3/4 and I don't like tearing that I get when V-Sync is disabled. The 120Hz wins it for me and easily.

I'm the same, but I couldn't ever go back to a TN panel after having a 120hz IPS.

When I really struggle to hit FPS I just drop to 1080p res 1:1 still end up with a big enough picture to play the very few titles that struggle.

Are AMD cards out the window?

Just ordered a 290 that's been flashed to a 290x and because they have a good amount of extra ROP's compared to the Nvidia cards they seem to handle higher resolutions better.

I would consider them but would prefer AIB cards and wanted to build a rig in the next few weeks ready for Christmas break. Also if I go 1080p and maybe Asus it would be nice to try out g-sync.

Greg, I heard that the Titan drivers for gaming haven't improved as dramatically since launch compared to 780 and now the 780 Ti. Would be great if you have a 780 and on the same system could verify this because I have a sneaking feeling there may small but sufficient gains in minimum frametime to improve the smoothness.

For a good 1920x1080 display the BenQ XL2420T looks excellent, is 3D capable (reduced after I asked Gibbo for something off them), with vesa mounts, 144Hz, best of all it's reduced to £300 which may make also buying a 780 Ti easier to justify but that's totally down to you of course :)

I don't have a 780 bud but Rusty does and he has a 1440P monitor. I am still claiming a 780 will not get 60fps average with settings fully maxed.

gregster I rechecked my crisis settings and indeed you were correct, my aa setting was on msaa medium, when I increased it to high it ran at 22-25 fps which looked nice enough but got a bit choppy, ran it again with msaa medium and got steady 30 fps and very playable

Good info bud and thanks for running the full and checking frames. I was starting to think something was wrong with my system :)
