Blue spark, burning smell, that's probably good right?

My old Corsair 520W psu just kicked the bucket... Proper massive blue flash, no smoke but lots of smell. And now, a bit stuck for what to do next, so any advice'd be very welcome

The system's old but solid- a Q6600 G0 on a DS3L board, 8gb of (fast) ddr2 (reaper I think) with a slightly newer GTX560 *not ti*. Clocked to 3400 obv, crime not to. Adequate to my needs- strategy and rpg gaming at 24 inches, some video editing. But everything's outdated now.

So, obviously a chance it's taken out other components. Don't have a spare PC or PSU so I'll need to spend money to test it. I'm thinking £20 for a Swift PSU is a good start, but that's not a component I'd normally choose- it's essentially a £20 diagnostic. From choice, I guess a BeQuiet Pure Power for £53 but then, the PC might be unrecoverable.

So trying to think ahead to "what's next" which is about £500 to spend on a new PC- full build, or maybe a DIY build retaining the old case, drives and OS. And that's where I'm stuck because obviously spending money on a PSU makes sense if it can go into a new build, but not if I buy a complete box.

So, yeah. Tell me what to think oh oracle;) OCUK built the old PC after all! I'm kind of inclined to take this as a base for "plan B pc" but in all honesty, if the old PC lives, I'll just keep that!

If you tell us where abouts in the country you are perhaps a local ocuker can help with testing

Yeah, that sounds like good advice. Ach well full steam ahead, one Purepower ordered!

Funny thing is, I built the machine myself but taking it apart just now I have absolutely no idea what's going on inside it. Wires everywhere, fans at all different volts, I'm sure it made sense 6 years ago but it's a box of mystery to me now :) Found a bit of a fan controller I didn't even know i had!

I have a Be Quiet dark power pro PSU. It has been fantastic. I certainly wouldn't have any concerns about your choice.

I did just notice the PSU you linked to has the worst special offer of all time.

was £59.99 inc VAT
now £61.99 inc VAT

Nice one OCUK :)

Hah, it was on discount yesterday :) Old one was a Seasonic (well, Corsair branded) and it did good but the Be quiet's got a good rep so thought I'd give it a go.

It should be OK. I had a Corsair 520 expire about 3 years ago, the rest of the PC was unaffected.

Job's a good un, straight swap in and everything good as gold (and the Be Quiet is quieter than the old Corsair to boot). Took me ages to work out the wiring, I used to know this stuff. Decided to swap my speakers over at the same time and that turned out to be an incredible pain in the baws mind. Even cleaned me mouse mat. So cheers folks, helped me along to the right answer (even if it does mean I can't justify a new mobo etc!)

Oh and Overclockers free saturday delivery ftw!
