New R9 280X. Best cable to use ?

Hi all.

Question regarding cable choice.

I have just installed a new Gigabyte R9 280X into my sons PC.
His TV has two HDMI and the blue VGA port, NO DVI port.

I have connected the card via a DVI to VGA.

I have tried using a HDMI cable but it does not seem to fill the screen out properly, even after trying all the resolution settings.

Is running a card such as this via a DVI to VGA cable a complete waste of time.

I have dug out a DVI to HDMI cable but not tried it as yet, would this cable give the best result ?

Not really up on such matters to be honest.

Any help will be great.

Is the graphic driver installed? And is the TV running in the right mode (i.e. PC mode if it has one)?

With the HDMI you may need to put the TV into a different aspect ratio, something like "Screen Fit" might be an option.

Go to the amd vision/catalyst control center find "my digital flat-panels"
Within that section you'll find scaling options. Drag the slider to the far right which takes it away from underscan and it should work fine.
I've had similar issues with this on tv's monitors and that fixes it from my experience

Was going to post exactly that when I saw "HDMI" and "not filling screen". Ussie, you beat me to it.

OP - try to avoid using VGA if you can. It's an older, analogue system where GPUs and LCDs use digital. Converting between the two can cause picture quality to suffer (in my experience, it becomes blurry). This means using DVI/HDMI to DVI/HDMI is just digital to digital, where adding VGA anywhere means digital to analogue to digital, so two conversions. If both converters are excellent, the picture quality will be the same as digital, but why take the chance for the sake of (usually) just buying a cheap HDMI or DVI cable?

Hi, thanks very much for this info.

Connected up the HDMI to HDMI cable. Changed the settings as described and it worked a treat.

He's testing how a game looks as I type.

Another question

It is now connected to the TV with both the HDMI o HDMI and I have left the DVI to VGA in.

Is this wise or is it bet to just have the HDMI to HDMI cable connected?

He has just tested BF4 and he tells me the FPS has gone up from 80 to 107.

This has to be better.

No need to have both cables in, ditch the dvi/vga I'm assuming the TV is 60Hz, so 107 FPS means he can crank the image quality up

I know nowt about gaming terms but I did see him set BF4 to HIGH settings. Is this what you meant ?

CPU is i5 3570k ( no OC )
8 gig RAM

There's "Ultra" above High, or custom if you wanna tweak settings to get the best without hurting FPS too much. Ideally for the smoothest experience you want minimum frame rate to never be below 60 but going down into the 50s ain't exactly bad either.

107 FPS is great performance but keeping it there is somewhat wasted unless you're using a 120Hz+ monitor/tv, so spend that performance on the visuals

Why no OC on the cpu btw? It's a K-edition so may as well crank it up, even the crappiest aftermarket coolers out there can handle overclocks to 4.0Ghz no problem.

Basically the monitor/tv is 60Hz, so it refreshes 60 times a second which means the maximum it can show you is 60 frames per second. So, the computer might be spitting out 100+ frames but you won't see them unless you had a higher Hz monitor/tv.

Hence spend the performance on increasing the graphics quality in game, FPS will drop but you won't notice it because you can't see it - but you will see the improved graphics

Ahhhhh. I see what you mean. I will tell my lad.

So really he needs a better monitor. Not a TV but a dedicated PC game monitor.
Will have to see about getting one when the money pot fills up again.

This seems to be the sort of thing which will make a big difference.
The funds wont reach that far right now but summet to think about.

To say I bought his current monitor only a few months back as an emergancy replacement for his original TV.

Now his PC has evolved so does his monitor.

xD happens to me all the time whenever I change a gpu I guess its some default safety option to ensure your contents are ALL on the screen instead of the opposite which can prove quite annoying if not everything is on the screen i've seen that happen before.
