The Wii U/Nintendo sales and financial data thread

So yeah, despite a price drop and Wii Party U, the sales still dropped pretty badly. Nintendo are pretty much pinning all their hopes on 3D World to have a good holiday season now.

September 2013:
3ds: 219k (43.8k/w)
ps3: 216k (43.2k/w)
360: 179k (35.8k/w)
wii u: 95k (19k/w)
vita: 41k (8.2k/w)

October 2013:
3ds: 452k +106% (133k/w +203%)
360: 166k -7.3% (41.5k/w +16%)
ps3: 110k -49% (27.5k/w -36.3%)
wii u: 55k -42.1% (13.8k/w -27.4%)
vita: 28k -31.7% (7k/w -14.6%)

Yet their handheld division continue to dominate...as has been said several times, yup the Wii U is in trouble and isn't selling well but with the 3DS continuing to be an absolute juggernaut they don't exactly have much to worry about!

If the Wii U fails, it fails, Nintendo can afford several failures before they fall into trouble.

Still see Mario having a boost...

This isn't the 3DS thread though. Holidays will give the Wii U a huge bump but then what? Figures are pretty grim.

Yes but it's all relevent is it not? People seem to think Nintendo ultimately will be in trouble but they can afford a failure with the Wii U. They can keep the system going with the revenue they bring in elsewhere.

From the Mario World release to the release of Donkey Kong (confirmed FEB) > Mario Kart (MAR/APR) > Smash Bros (Hopefully 1st half of the year) if there is no traction after these releases then it will be a massive worry to Nintendo and to how long they keep the console going.

Rough start but hopefully the end and start of next year will see them gain some traction.

I'm starting to wonder what on earth the million Japanese Wii U owners are playing, Mario came out last week and sold horribly compared to any other 3D Mario game, console sales only went up by 5K also.

3D Mario Week One Sales:

1) Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 337,569 (1,032,853 total)
2) Super Mario 3D Land - 344,698 (1,861,023 total)
3) Super Mario Sunshine - 280,610 (789,989 total)
4) Super Mario Galaxy - 256,341 (1,025,664 total)
5) Super Mario 64 - 162,113 (1,639,914 total)
6) Super Mario 64 DS - 120,062 (1,231,535 total)
7) Super Mario 3D World - 106,967

Surely Nintendo must be starting to get worried now, if not even Mario 3D World can shift a ton of copies.

JPN sales data.

Move along here - nothing to see.

As said a million times before - Japan has gone handheld.

People need to build a bridge and get over it.

Looking at this chart makes me wonder! I own every device on that list and looking at where the 3DS and Vita sit puzzles me! while enjoy the 3DS it's bettered in every way by the Vita and the Vita now has enough great games and with the advent of the PS4 more uses to warrant it being allot further up that list.

I think Nintendo has given itself a massive task to sell the Wii U, from an outsiders point of view - is it a Wii with new controller, a new console, We've already got a Wii why do we need another? Nintendo scored massively with attracting new players to console gaming like old folk, mums and people who wouldn't normally play games. However most of these people soon got board with the gimmicky controllers and endless shovel ware and learned gaming wasn't for them after all, these people won't go out and buy Wii U even if they can work out what it is.

Hardcore gamers aren't buying Wii U has it's not as good as PS4 or Xbone for playing COD or BF and it doesn't have a proper gaming pad. So in the end Nintendo's market is Nintendo fans who want to play Nintendo games and this is always going to be the smallest market.

I really hope the Wii U doesn't fail (only just got mine and love it) but if it does Nintendo need to bring out a normal console with a normal controller and a totaly new name and at least 5 must have launch titles for it to get back to were it should be.

Nintendo have made several mistakes.

1) Calling the Wii U the Wii U - BIG BIG MISTAKE - People don't understand it's a new console - they should have found a new name for it.
2) **** all marketing
3) **** all to play on it

Points 2 and 3 are being resolved

Point 1 will though forever haunt Nintendo. Stupid stupid idea.

Yeah I think this was their biggest mistake especially considering the new none tech user base they gained, Oh and then they make it look the same as a Wii to lol

See my post about my son in the Wii U thread for a good example of the Wii / Wii U confusion!

You realise that Japanese Wii U sales are still higher than EU ones right? so if it's doing that badly in JPN then EU is even more screwed.

Consolidated financial results of 2012-2013

Considering Nintendo released the Wii U last november, they had 3.45M (edit - miscalculated) hardware sales worldwide in it's first 4 months and 1.3 million software sales (wii u only here, check the last chart for all devices). They're not doing that bad but I definitely agree they need more hard hitters so that the software sells the hardware.

I'm also curious to see how this fiscal year will end up, from April 1st to March 31st 2014, they could have had a great year. Remember a slow start is never the end, especially if we compare the 360 and PS3 in their first 4 months but that's irrelevant when the titanic Xbone and PS4 are out. :p

All the doom and gloom, it's getting boring now. Wii U is just getting started, every launch console has very few truly worthwhile games. Wii U had a slow start, but so did 3DS. This time next year Wii U will be doing just fine and the doom sayers will have moved onto predicting doom of something else..

How many times does this cycle have to be repeated whenever Nintendo launch something, why is it people that don't own the Wii U that moan about it? It's weird, if you like Wii U enjoy the upcoming games, if not do something better with your life than trolling about poor sales..

That's why we have this thread though, to keep all these people in one place where you can easily ignore them.

Just stay out of this thread, it's great because they all stay in here now instead of ruining the main Wii U thread with their pointless sales rubbish.

You keep making the mistake of comparing the handheld market with the console market. We know the 3DS started slow, but that doesn't mean tbe WiiU will magically recover when there are two other far more powerful consoles with massively bigger libraries of games due to far more third party support. The situations sre completely different

243k isn't a bad number considering it went up against the Xbone release.

Titles above it...COD:Ghosts Xbone/360, Zelda 3DS and Battlefield 4 Xbone.

The one thing about Nintendo is their titles 1st party ones like Mario, Mario Kart etc tend to have good sales figures throughout the console lifetime. Nintendo will sell more Wii U's and as they sell so will their 1st party Mario titles.

Hopefully the numbers in the US improve as the next gen stocks dry up and the game continues to sell. Pretty encouraging number for a couple of days of sales though.

I expect people to have a different slant on things however :p
