Any other way to switch the BIOS? Apparently it doesn't do anything for non-X cards but I am about to flash to Asus BIOS and I heard you need to toggle the switch as the default BIOS is write-protected.

It's also nice to have a backup BIOS slot.

No, just that switch, how do you mean blocked? can you not get a thin bit of plastic like a ruler under the bridge?
 
Although it would be best to make sure both your bios work, you probably need to use the -f command(force) to flash anyway regardless what bios switch you are using:

atiflash -f -p 0 asus.rom
