Assuming:

Both are OC models
They are the same price
R9 270X comes with BF4 (I already have it)
GTX 670 comes with Splinter Cell Blacklist & Assassins Creed Black Flag (I have neither)
It's going in a HTPC so heat is an issue

Which would be better? I've only been able to find one review which had both of them on it and it seems the 670 GTX is the better performer in games but I wanted to ask around rather than treating that review as gospel. It'll be going into a PC with an i5 2500k, 8gb ddr3 and an SSD. It runs on a TV so no resolutions over 1360 x 768.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the Nvidia card with it having two games that I don't have plus that review saying it's a faster card.

Is this JUST an HTPC or will you be playing games on it too?

Games as well

I use it as a proper gaming system as well as home theatre, but it's in a HTPC case in my TV stand (Silverstone GD08) with the door closed.

The 670 is faster, it performs similarly to a 7950 while the 270X is a 7870. The only real advantage of the 270X over it is the potential of Mantle.

Sorry but your wrong, the 270 is the same as 7950 theirs a vs chart knocking about some where.

The 270X has a high stock clock, which is while it can match the stock clock 7950. It won't have much overclocking headroom left...so comparing if comparing both the GTX670 and the 270x on max overclock, I would think the GTX670 would come out a little ahead as well.

However, I would think the performance difference is too small to worth talking about, so I would say it's down to feature preference. As teppic mention above, the 270x has the benefit of Mantle, which games in the future supporting it will give it further boost in performance as well as requiring lesser CPU grunt for performance scaling; the GTX670 got PhysX, and that's about it really. G-sync useless for anyone except for those that are willing go out of the way and buying a new monitors that support it (I myself might get a new Nvidia card to play with G-sync, when/if a decent 21:9 monitor that support it is available).

This is wrong its a 7870 if you look at the cores its less than a 7950 and same as the 7870

Also you can xfire a 7870 with the 270x so that says it all really

The 280x is a 7970

I'm also looking for a new card not sure if 2 get a 680 @ £199 or a 7970 @ £203

Which do you think is best option ?

Sry for hijack

The 270X is absolutely identical to a 7870 GE, except it has a boost clock of 1050MHz and higher clocked memory. The 7950 has a different GPU, 3GB VRAM and a 384bit bus. It's in a different class.

The 270X (already clocked near its limit) will perform roughly the same as a stock reference 7950, except in Crossfire.

The 670 is the better card.

Well with out getting in to an argument, one of the Dons posted a thread showing the R series equivalent an the 70 was either the same as a 7850 or a 7950.

Take your pick ive gone 10 pages back an can't find it, so if your that bothered have a search for it ;)

As everyone has already pointed out, the 270X is nowhere near as powerful as a 7950. 270X is a re-badge of a 7870. An overclocked 7850 can almost match a 270X.

A 7950, when oc'd, will be a million miles faster than a 270X. There's just no contest. This is why I and many others were hugely disappointed that there is no 7950 class card in the R2xx range.

OP, at your chosen res of 1360x768, either card will be capable of great framerates in just about anything, even after turning up the details.

1360x768 is a really low resolution these days. That's 1/2 the pixels of 1080p.

So then it's down to the coolers. If this is a HTPC then you want quiet. If the cooler on the 670 is a reference cooler, it probably isn't very quiet.

Personally I'd get the 670. Much faster card, and if you upgrade your display you'll have plenty of power for 1080p.

As someone who has just purchased a reference GTX 670 from the MM I can offer some comments on the noise characteristics of the reference cooler. It is not overly loud, but it does have an annoying 'grating/growling' pattern to the sound at idle.

Fortunately I have an Arctic Accelero Mono Plus ready to fit which should make it unnoticeable within my case.

Performance wise as Kaapstad links to, it is 20% faster than the 270X. Often the GTX 670s can be significantly overclocked too. At stock settings, mine boosts to 1071Mhz. It should be a lot more under the new cooler with the power target increased above 100%.

Could be new 270X vs 2nd hand 670.

As said, the 670 outclasses the 270X, as does the 7950. The 270X is a brilliant card for ~£150 though. The 670 outperforms the 760, which is £200ish.
