I am new to gaming. Not from the perspective have never having played video games before but from the perspective that I fell out of love with games.
I was a boy when the original PS came out. I have only vague memories of the SNES and Megadrive. They were when I was too young but the original Playstation got me seriously into games. I would sit and play F1 all night long. Ridgeracer, Time Crisis with that cool gun... but then I had a problem. After playing games for years I started noticing I would feel dizzy and sick and so I had to pull back from games (I guess I have some kind of vertigo induced by movement on screen that I am not actually making - I was always prone to car sickness when I was young.)
So I missed out on the PS2 and original Xbox. I just wasn't interested. I did buy the PS3 however and played a total of zero games on it. I just used it as a glorified Blu-ray player (which it was awesome for).
So onto today... I have decided I want to get back into gaming. Admittedly light gaming as I still feel ill when playing anything for more than half an hour - but I wanted to get back and do that with the new consoles.
So I went and bought both.
So I am new to gaming. I don't really know what to expect of games but I can tell you my impressions of the first time I opened them and turned them on. I would appreciate feedback on what you guys think of my impressions and if you agree or not.
Xbox One
Super heavy box. I was thinking I could skip the gym and just lift this up several times a day!
It is like a jigsaw when you open it, so many different parts and cables. Fun but kind of daunting when you look at it.
Design is very meh. I think it looks much better in photos than real life. The new Kinect is kind of intimidating with its 3 red LEDs looking at you like the terminator.
And that power supply is incredibly loud!
But when I turned it on the interface was beautiful and the setup easy. Xbox live worked and the apps downloaded and games as well. The voice activation is incredibly cool although
I am not sure how well it works as I was getting variable results with it.
I played a bit of FIFA and I feel like the control pad is heavier than I would want and slightly awkward to hold.
PlayStation 4
I opened the much lighter box and it was literally three parts - console, controller, power cable. Simple.
The PS4 itself was light and looks cool and sleek, futuristic most definitely.
Interestingly enough the PS4 by default was running at 1080P and the Xbox was at 720P just on the home screens.
The PS4 interface however sucks. It isn't attractive. It is an evolution of the PS3 but it is just boring to look at. I know Sony are hitting the gaming side super hard here
and so for a gamer I guess who cares but for a casual person like myself it turned me off, that and the background music. Why Sony? Why do I need annoying music in
the background that I have to turn off!?
PSN was not working - so I wasn't able to redeem my year PSN subscription voucher (thanks Sony, stop your new customers accessing game downloads and demos when it
is new. Great move. Fire your network team)
I didn't play a game on the PS4 as all I had was Killzone and I know that I would have been feeling ill almost immediately so I didn't bother.
My hotel internet was terrible (Note to both Sony and Microsoft: How about a wifi hotspot login page....!!!! come on as I had to tether).
I felt like I needed the camera to really enjoy the PS4. I don't know if that is true but I felt if I want to stream or use twitch I would find more use with the camera.
(Question: Can you record video using the camera and export it?)
However, I think that twitch is an awesome service and the share button on the controller is fantastic... talking about the controller... by far and away much better
than the Xbox in my opinion. It is lighter, feels more comfortable to me and the sheer awesome tech in that is outstanding with the touchpad (that I have no idea
where I can use it). I love that controller.
Sort of Comparison
In all honesty what I would want now would be the PS4 design and controller with the Xbox software. That would be perfect.
