Are Apple going backwards?

Today I bought an iPod touch 8gb 2nd Gen and sound dock because they were pretty cheap. (and the ipod was boxed with headphones)

The touch has ios 4.2.1 installed. It is slower than my iPhone 5 but so much easier to use. The icons are better and everything just seems 'cleaner'

The touch itself ergonomically feels much better, its thinner, lock button is in the correct place for you to quickly press with your index finder and middle finger for volume buttons. It fits in my hand without having to flick it backwards and forwards a bit like I do my iPhone 5

When designing the iPhone, wouldn't Apple have been better off just upgrading hardware and screen in the iPod touch? The IP 5 in comparison feels bulky and IOS 7 still looks like a kids toy OS to me

IP5 bulky?

Then you have another thread of people complaining it's not big enough as a phone.

iOS7 is like kids toy?

You have another thread of people complaining the old icons looks like kids toy and new one is more sleeker.

You can't win.

I wouldn't say the IP5 is bulky, its just the 2nd gen touch (not sure about other gens) fits much better in your hand, making it easier to use. If people want phones with massive screens, why not just get a tablet or a laptop?

Icons just seem to stand out more on ios6 as they are easier to see. Maybe its just my eyes (at least the maps icon doesn't drive you over a motorway bridge now!)

Yes... but not for the reasons you describe... I'll explain more when I wake up in the morning (suddenly gotten really sleepy!)

I was unsure a out iOS7 when I first installed it but I can't believe how old fashioned iOS6 looks already after seeing that screenshot. I personally like the new look, whilst I agree it's not perfect and in places the amount of white can be jarring it's so much cleaner than it used to be.

Plus, integration across multiple devices has moved on leaps and bounds and is actually a pleasure to use now.

It's all a matter of opinion. I think iOS 7 is fantastic and (given the choice) would never go back to 6.

I would speculate that the reason why the iPhone 5/5S/5C are not as thin as the touch you mention OP is the requirement for the antennae and as a result a larger battery. I'm in the camp that feels the iPhone 5 is a tad on the light side and preferred the heft the glass gave the 4/4S mainly because I feel, when the 5 is without a case, that it's so light I don't notice it at times and might lose it.

You're comparing the size of a music player and a phone? They're totally different devices. They may both run the same operating system but the phone needs to be bulkier as there's more hardware inside plus a larger battery. Comparing apples (no pun intended) and oranges tbh.

iOS 7 is ok, I still prefer iOS 6 which i have on my iphone 5 still, I have 7 on my retina mini, and it's ok, but it feels buggy to me. It's not as slick as I expect from apple, I get the odd crash in apps or safari, had a soft reboot one day, feels like Android more than Apple at the moment.
I am sure Apple will iron out the bugs but I feel they rushed this one out the door too fast for the 5C and the colour matching BS.

iOS7 will look a lot better when 3rd party developers have all updated their icons and really started to use the new APIs.

If you look at the functionality of the iWork programs (Pages09, Numbers09 and Keynote09) and compare it to the latest version (released last month) it goes without question that they are going backwards... Dumbing down and removing key features which made those programs better than Office (IMO).

In fairness they re-added some omitted features just last week.

Its still not good enough though. Not for a professional environment. They are catering for a more casual audience which I'm okay with, but why remove what seem to be basic features? It serves no purpose.

p.s. I'm happy if they keep this and then release a feature rich 'pro' version... If apple did that, they would do it well and I'd be happy (much like you have iPhoto for basic stuff and aperture for advanced stuff I'd want basic pages and pages pro)
