Think I just about had enough with stuff not working on w8.1 and am going format and go back to w7 to see if it was w8.1 causing the problems..

Here three of the things that seem to been broken by w8.1 I foundout by trying to run them this morning

Can you not just install W7 on a spare drive or partition, to test out your concerns...?

That is what I did after having some "niggles" with my Win 8.1 install, which was a fresh install of 8.1. Nothing really wrong with it per se, even with the Classic Shell installed, I just enjoy using W7.

Yesterday I ended up using Macrium Reflect to create a backup image of 8.1 and then used my W7 install on my primary drive.

I suppose I could put the backed up image of 8.1 on my secondary drive but I doubt that I would boot to it. However it is there backed up if I should ever need to.

Yes I most likely do that first..

As I have a brandnew unopen 2TB harddrive here that been sitting on my desk for last 6months that I bought to upgrade my skyHD box that I never got around to fitting..:o

Did any of these work under Win8?

If you look on the net 3dmark 11 will work as long as you have the futuremark system info component installed.
The MS compatibility centre shows fear as compatible.
Not sure on WIC

I don't think that will matter, as I had one game work in windows 8 only to have it instantly stop working upon starting on 8.1

All my games (about 30+ installed)run great on Win8.1 even with overclocked CPU and video card, probably something else causing the issue IMHO.

I'll say my Win8.1 was a clean install.

To be fair I have heard this comment from XP to Vista,Vista to Win7,Win7 to Win8,sure it's easy to get frustrated and blame the OS but 99.9% of the time its always something else.

For gaming boxes it's probably not a good idea to upgrade right away. I've seen quite a few driver issues with 8.1, and more blue screens than I've seen for a long time.

I think Microsoft is coming to a sticky end :D

Hopefully soon with OS's like Steam we will be able to dual boot to a simple low overhead solid Gaming system.

8.1 is just an example of MS trying to satisfy unhappy users without actually ever really intending to do anything fundamentally different with their product.

Ive just brought a new dell xps machine with windows 8 on..............OMG im dumstuck how bad win8 is!

I actually had to google how to shut it down! Win7 getting installed as we speak lol

Just upgrade to 8.1. It makes Shutdown easier out of the box, plus then you can install StartisBack. Then set the Start Screen to come up if you press Shift+Win, then swap it with the Start Menu (so it becomes Shift+Win for the classic Start Menu) then maybe you will get used to it...

Would be my plan if having a full-screen start menu didn't really annoy me... ;)

So I just have the Start Screen as Shift+Win and the Start Menu as Win.

Anyone find Coretemp has issues on W8.1 too? Sometimes it works ok, Other times it gives an error, Other times it locks the system when opening..

I've noticed this, thought it was a problem with my system. Glad someone else is having the same problem.

iirc, RC5 (or whatever the last version is) worked fine.
Is that with using the latest RC 6 version released on 9th October 2013?
