I'm not sure if this should be here or in the games section but if it's wrong then by all means move it ;)

I play GTA 4 and 5 a fair bit, I like both games and after upgrading from a 560Ti to a R9 290 I am now able to max out every settings in the details which is good.

My problem is that it still doesn't look as good as I expected considering I was running the game at about 50% detail on 560Ti .. I have gone into the Catalyst control centre and maxed out all the settings there but the result is no different. I will concede that the game is smooth as hell even with all the extras cranked up but I just feel a little unimpressed as I still have a few stepped lines like round the windows of the cars from certain angles.. how can I get rid of this jaggedness? It says I'm using 998MB of my allotted 4000 that my 290 provides so I assume I have room to manoeuvre.

I have tried Icehancer2.1 but as my GTA is updated it conflicts and looks like I'm watching on an old Black and White Tv (with faded colour) .. Can anyone help me get the best picture I can?

Not wanting to sound overly stupid ... but will switching to Edge detect cure these jaggys or should I be looking at mods to make the picture quality better?

I'm running at 1080p with 8GB RAM on a i5 2500 @3.3Ghz +4GB 290 "Pro"

Thanks.

When I last looked at modding GTA IV, the Steam version was so incompatible with them I gave up.

Sweetfx will enable ENB lighting and SSAA, which improves it a fair bit. Same old awful textures of course.

edit: not ENB, just bloom.

How are you playing GTA 5 on a PC?

Sorry my post may have been misleading I play GTA 5 on XB and 4 on PC. I should probably have titled it EFLC rather than V

@teppic thanks I will have a look at that.

@pgi947 I have tried Icenhancer but as my game is fully up to date it is not compatible and causes more issues than it gives benefits and I am using EFLC expansions and can't roll my game back to the version that Icenhancer would work with AND keep my expansions.

I have enb visual mods working just fine on the latest version? Looks sexy :D

Have a Google about, gta mods go further then just the icehancer pack :)

I had a quick look and obviously saw Icenhancer as it was the most popular one and looking at the videos on youtube it looked really sweet but I cannot get it to work on my game and the website says that it Is not compatible with EFLC and the updated game.

I will give Sweet FX a try

I will concede that the textures in the default game are awful so i'll have to mod those I guess.

Ta

With SweetFX Niko was invisible and half my UI was missing lol

I guess i'll have to go looking for some separate texture and lighting mods

Thanks for the help anyway guys.

I haven't got a clue why but when I used a 6990 on GTAIV all of the textures and everything looked like it was in some sort of low res compatibility mode even with the settings maxed out. Maybe it's because I was using a ATI card (might have not liked my system) as it's had good image quality when I've used a 580, 690 and Titan.

Are you sure that gta iv is not running in restricted mode? The game doesn't recognise over 2gb of video memeory very well and thinks you don't have enough vram, even when you do. In the graphics options there will be text in red with a message about vram etc. So you get rubbish settings regardless of what you set them to. There is something like -norestrictions command you have to add in steam properties for the game. There are some other commands to bypass the game trying to be "helpful" thinking your system can't cope.

Gta iv doesn't like aa. I just use amd mlaa setting in catalyst control and it sorts out all the jaggies, mostly. I know there are better options, but this is the easiest and guaranteed to work. I thought the same with jaggies on the car windows etc... Mlaa certainly helps with no messing about.

Also make sure you have definition option turned on (or off)(press "p" whilst playing). One option puts a blurry filter over the textures and makes it look horrible.

All the types of AA are dung and GTA is one brown fugly dog even with ENB. To be honest you need to bump up to something like 4K res to get rid of those jaggies or use MSAA which GTA wont allow.

Yes I have definition turned on, I am using the GTA4.exe with "-norestrictions" as without it the game forces EVERYTHING to minimum but with -norestrictions I can adjust the detail. GTA4 also detects the 4GB of memory on the 290 and says that with all settings maxed out im using 998MB of it. If I actual pay proper attention to the screen I can see that all the other stuff like view distance Is definitely better, it's just those lines that are bugging me. I will try to post a couple of screens later to show my settings and what they are putting on the screen.

ENB I used to use called GioNights best ENB had the option to Downsample 3840x2160 to 1080p and on a big screen the game looked immense with so much detail and significantly less jaggies. Takes one epic system to keep it above 30fps with max details though, which is mainly due to the poor optimisation from the console port.

I hope Rockstar do GTA5 right but who am I kidding, I'd be happy enough if they could at least get dual GPU's to scale.
