NatWest customers rushed to Twitter and other sites on Monday evening to report their debit and credit cards were being decined in shops across Britain. Other said they couldn't use the bank's website or smartphone apps, either.

Just gone to log into my online banking to make a transfer and wondered how it could be offline at 8pm. I know they sometimes have maintenance but its a little early in the evening.

Surprising a bank can cease to function under load.

Noticed the banking app was taking ages to login earlier, it did eventually then crashed.

I think as a nation, we're becoming very intolerant and it's a "now now now" attitude.

So i have to wait... Well if the app didn't exist, and nor did online banking, i'd have to go into a branch in the morning anyway.

Time of the signs i suppose!

Allegedly their back-end systems are awful and held together with many hacks ;).

Mind you, keeping a banks IT system up can't be easy.

I guess when our society has moved on from posting cheques and getting statements printed and has adjusted to instant banking, you kind of expect to be able to access your finances quickly.

I'm not too bothered as I'm sat in front of the fire with my cat and a can of Thatchers, but if I was out and desperately needed money for whatever reason, I'd be expecting a bank as big as Natwest to keep functioning.

what if somebody was at a petrol station and the only payment method they had was debit card.

go to petrol station armed with only your natwest debit card.

claim against Natwest for stress of police threat due to none payment.

£1million payment maybe??

Not really showing up in many news feeds.

With the quicker account switching and previous problems with Natwest systems, I wonder if this will cause many to switch?

£2million, settle at £1million.

Luckily mine seemed to work in asda about an hour ago or else I'd have been stuffed considering both my debit and credit cards are NatWest.

So glad I left that bank when I did. They used to be excellent but you could see the storm coming.

Girlfriend said her card was slow at lunch getting petrol. Luckily it went through or she would have used my credit card :p

They are getting it extremely tight on twitter just now!

Looks like the new quick switching service will get put to the test tomorrow

Explains why my payment on some site just got declined, opted for paypal in the end.. I'm currently in the process of moving to First Direct at the moment but oh my god... Their mobile application is terrible. Their website isn't that nice either!
