My Xmas gaming tradition... which games are worthy?

Time for my annual search for gaming input.

I have my own little tradition for Xmas. Since I'm pretty busy throughout the year with family and work, but I do always make sure to get around two to three weeks off over Xmas, this is the one time of year I can really sink myself into a big, absorbing game or two (or perhaps three at a push...).

Every year, though, it gets worse in that I have more and more games building up in my "to play" list.

I was earmarking Bioshock Infinite for one of my games this year, but I really just can't decide which of my library of games is/are worthy of being part of this sacred tradition (it IS a sacred tradition! I defy any who say otherwise!)

Off the top of my head, possible candidates are:

Bioshock Infinite
Far Cry 3
Metro Last Light
Borderlands 2
TW: Shogun 2
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Fable III
Saints Row: The Third
Sengoku
Dark Souls (though I don't own a controller, which I think might be needed for this one)
Mass Effect 3
Fallout NV
Divinity II (both Director's Cut and Dragon Knight Saga, not that I know the difference between them...)
The Saboteur
Splinter Cell Blacklist
Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
Assassin's Creed IV (do I need to play Brotherhood first? Not bought/played III or Revelations either, for that matter. Also I guess I could sell this whilst it's got some value...)

These must be two or three games of great quality and immersion that I will be able to lose myself in for days at a time and look back and remember my time with fondly. Did I mention this was a sacred tradition?

If you want to relax I would avoid dark souls. It's apparently very, very difficult. Still need to try it myself ;)

One vote for mass effect from me.

Dark Souls is not that hard, it just requires you to learn patterns like games used to be in the old days. Unlike today where every game holds your hand.

Played Far Cry 3 and enjoyed it.
Metro Last Light is meant to be immersive, I haven't played it myself though.
The Saboteur is a great (highly underrated) game imo.
Fallout NV is very immersive if you get the right mods etc.

As for the new Assassins Creed, I wouldn't say you need to play the previous ones. I'm pretty sure there's a 5 min video on youtube explaining the plot. Don't bother with AC3 though, it feels like a chore to complete, although it is quite fun in places :p

Borderlands 2 (make sure you have someone or someones to play it with. Vastly improved by playing co-op.

Mass Effect 3 is a good shout too. Bioshock Infinite didn't last very long for me, 6-7 hours. I played over 200 hours of Borderlands 2!

Metro gets my vote, immersive, atmosheric, and dark...suits the uk daylight (or none) at this time of year :). Also you will feel like a real bad ass hunting bandits with a suppressed double barrelled shottie ;)

Cool! And if Metro LL and Bioshock aren't that long, I might squeeze in four games! (Wahey!)

I did think Shogun 2 would take up most of the time. I remember finishing a single game of Medieval 2 and looking at my played hours... well over 70! :o

Now planning to start my first day off with Bioshock, then move on to Metro LL. Probably take me up to around Xmas day. Then Far Cry 3, I think.

I was planning to sell Assassin's Creed IV to help fund my GTX 670 and the family presents, thinking by the time I manage to get around to it, likely in the summer, it will be less than the £20 or so I'll probably get for it now.

Having read some reviews, though, it looks great. Maybe the last game I'll mop up the holiday period with. Toss up between that, Borderlands 2 and Xcom, I think.

Ahhh.... roll on the holidays!! :)

If you've played The Walking Dead, season 2 is meant to be out this month. I suggest this as I think the story is something you'll remember, your guidance of Clementine.

I would recommend Borderlands 2 great game with some great characters, doesn't take its self to serious and plenty of game time to be had.

New Vegas (patched and possibly modded) you can lose days in but IS completable.
Bioshock Infinite is excellent, self-contained and very easy to lose yourself in.
FC3 is good out-of-the-box and will draw you in.

Those would be my recommendations (in that order)

BL2 is ace but I do not think of as a session game in the same way - it's a game to play long-term, spread over months and months (and months) of an hour at a time.

You would be mad not to play Bioshock Infinite and should be able to get it finished with enough time to fit in a few other games!

Two words: Bioshock Infinite.

Aa, and don't even think Dark Souls without a gamepad...
