My Xmas gaming tradition... which games are worthy?

Far Cry 3 is a really good game. Can't go wrong with that. But I would also recommend Borderlands 2. I didn't like the first one but the second one is great. Feels like a mix between Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Portal 2 (for the comedy).

Why is Dishounred not on your list?
Deffo my GOTY, tis really worth a play, it's been a while since a game had me playing it thru multiple times :)

if you can get a controller (with a keyboard it is like trying to drive a car blindfolded with a steering wheel for each wheel and 20 foot pedals) dark souls is worth it, however you will require atleast 2 stress balls and some anti-depressants to get through the rage it will cause you when you die trying to kill a boss that has only one more hit worth of health left.

Metro last light is a god choice if you have played through metro 2033, x-com is always fun and as people are saying above dishonored, it is really really good, very good story line and a few different ways to play it e.g. kill everyone or no one

I try to go through a series when I have a holiday. You said ME3 so I'd say play ME 1 2 and 3. Good times.

I've played, and thoroughly enjoyed, ME 1 & 2 (and still have my ME2 savegame kept waiting for 3). The only thing putting me off was... I thought everyone was down on ME3 for various reasons, most of all its horrible ending or something? If it's not the trainwreck I was fearing it might I'd definitely love to give it a go.

If you've played The Walking Dead, season 2 is meant to be out this month. I suggest this as I think the story is something you'll remember, your guidance of Clementine.

I did love Walking Dead Season 1, but I never pay full price for games these days. With so many on my to play list that I already own it seems a waste not to wait for the sales...

For the sole reason that Dishonored was my Xmas game last Xmas! And it was perfect! Got in a little collection of nice dark ales, spent a few days in the house alone losing myself in Dunwall... bliss!

BL2 is ace but I do not think of as a session game in the same way - it's a game to play long-term, spread over months and months (and months) of an hour at a time.

Great. That sounds perfect for my rest-of-year bite-sized gaming fix. Usually have one per month or two I can dive into and out of for 30-40 minutes at a time.

Sooo looking forward to the 18th now (my first day off)!

Definitely starting with a bit of Bioshock Infinite. Then I think FC3. After that if there's time, a toss-up between Metro LL and ME3.

Man, I love Christmas! :D

Far Cry 3
Borderlands 2
TW: Shogun 2
XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Dark Souls
Fallout NV
Assassin's Creed IV

These are my votes, hard to pick only three :o

Shogun 2 and Fallout are both heavy time sinks, you will be playing them for ages, so maybe not the best idea! And Dark Souls can take quite a long time to complete on first play through, but it one of the best games this generation (in my opinion... :p).

Out of those six, my final choices to play over Christmas would be:

Far Cry 3
Assassins Creed 4
and
X-Com

Now, these might not be the best games, but they are a varied selection which offer up great single player experiences that you should be able to complete :)

Dark Souls would be my choice of the ones I've played from your list, none of the others consumed me in the same way, it's rare for me to be so into a game these days but Dark Souls had me completely immersed for very long periods, to the point where I was forgetting time and playing all night, 8 hrs would seem like an hour.

TBH, considering I have so many unplayed games and I can still probably get £18 or so for AC4, I'm leaning towards selling it now. I do quite want to play it (pirate ships!), but I also need all the help I can get to pay off the massive spending spree I've been on recently (GTX 670, Crucial M5 240GB, Wii U, 64GB micro SDXC, 128GB Corsair Voyager, lots of tools and lumber...). Every little helps at times like these.

X-Com does look ace, too, and you're right that it would be a change of pace from the first-person/over-the-shoulder shooters... Hmm....

Do you still think it's a viable choice with no controller? Upthread it was made to sound... cumbersome with M&KB.

I wouldn't even entertain the idea of playing it without a controller, an XBOX 360 wired or wireless controller works perfectly with the game.

Yeah, this does put me off.

Largely because I hate controllers. Just don't get on with them. I know I've had no practice, but I am really all over the place with them. Can't coordinate characters in 3D space with them at all.

I play most things with M&KB first, even those designed for controllers. Things like Darksiders are a bit tricky, but I found I got used enough to them to manage.

What I'm hearing about Dark Souls, though, seems like it's rather different kettle of fish...

It may take a bit of getting used to using the controller but it's definitely worth the effort for this game, you don't need lightning reactions or crazy skills with a controller to enjoy Dark Souls, the combat system has been created in such a way that it tests patience and methodical timing.

High speed, button mashing skills (if you can call them skills) aren't required and will in fact get you nowhere, it's all about being methodical and observant of your foes movements and dare I say it playing the game in a calm/focused manner as opposed to using the violent nature of the game to release pent up aggression/nervous energy etc, this game rewards good Karma.:p(sort of, can't think of a better term).

Don't play ME3, it's not a patch on the previous 2 games and piddles on all the decisions you've made, the ending is woeful too.

Fallout nv is great, in a similar scenario to what you describe, I placed through it when I had a week of a couple of years ago.

Mass effect 3 is excellent - I am assuming you have played the others and know what to expect, if not start with mass effect 1.
