The new ASUS R9 290X DC2 would feature the same cooling system as GTX 780, equipped with two fans, one made in Cool Tech technology. There are five nickel plated heat pipes and a large aluminum fin array.

What is definitely disappointing are power connectors. ASUS decided to use reference configuration: one 6-pin and one 8-pin. This is nowhere revolutionary and we already know that Hawaii GPU really needs a lot of power. Plus, we also know that MSI is preparing 8+8+6-pin Lightning card, so it’s highly doubtful DC2 could even compete with it in terms of overclocking capabilities.

ASUS is asking everyone what could be improved in final revision of this card, so if you have any ideas make sure to post them in the comments on ASUS ROG page.

The DCII gets good reviews here but if you would like some input, head over to Asus ROG (I looked for where to add some info but couldn't find it sorry).

4 of these in Quadfire would be like having 4 of these...

Well maybe not quite :p

them even pretending ppl have an input on design tell us these are not before xmas ><
screw them i wouldnt buy an asus one by choice anyway
well maybe if it was very cheap :p

tho i did like the comments i read ppl asking pls dont make it red :)

Why only one of these "Cooltech" fans, why not both?

Does that come next year?

Anyway, this looks the same as the old ones with minor differences. Hopefully good enough to cope with the huge thermal load to give a good OC headroom.

Even if it is below spec on power connectors, ASUS tax will still apply to the price.

Still, good to see non-reference designs on the horizon.

Don't understand the article as this card is not the competitor to the lightning, that will be the Matrix Platinum, when it arrives.

The 7970 Matrix Platinum took a while to arrive, when it did it was actually better than the lightning.

of course, if you think of a normal say case fan, as a fan in a square holder. That holder acts to direct the air from going everywhere in the first place so the air has to go down.

It's a very interesting fan when you can't put a fan in a normal holder, however on these heatsinks, there is very little reason you can't do that. It's why your average prolimatech style heatsink always works better, better airflow from proper fans.

The biggest heatsink with rubbish airflow will be destroyed by even a fairly small heatsink with somewhat decent airflow.

The only reason to use a fan without a case that also acts to channel the air, is if the heatsink is designed around that very concept. Think of a Zalman flower cooler, where it had an "open" fan, because it had fins below and to the side.

When you don't have heatsink surrounding the fan, there is no reason at all to not have the fan in a holder to direct the airflow into the heatsink. Would the cooltech style fan work better in a normal case fan..... would it provide higher cfm, or higher pressure, don't know, possibly, it might be worse, it could be the same.

When I first saw it with crap pictures I thought it might be trying to direct air underneath the center of the fan body, because you usually get a deadzone in a heatsink under the middle of any fan(something those TMD? fans tried to fix with a tiny middle and the magnets around the outside of the fan).
