Hi,

Dad is looking to buy a new car to be a Taxi, he has a shortlist of:

Ford Mondeo
Skoda Superb
Citreon C5

So looking at that class of car, has to be diesel and a budget of 10k.

Any advice on the above or suggestions on other cars?

Why? The Superb is bigger and more comfortable, perfect for a taxi.

Because you can buy a much newer and therefore more economical/reliable car which for a cab I would have thought is pretty important.

Also, an Octavia is hardly small...

You'd feel cramped at the back of an Octavia compared to the likes of a Superb or Mondeo with their much bigger legroom. As a passenger, I'd be more comfortable in the latter two.

As for reliability, wouldn't both have similar engine and if anything the Superb would be more modern as it was introduced in 2008 (in hatchback form) whereas the Octavia was introduced years before (not counting the 2013 as that won't be under 10K).

Remember this is a cab, not a limousine - passengers are likely to only spend a short amount of time in the car and the rear of an Octavia isn't really cramped. I guess it's more for the OP to decide.

As I said in my previous post, buying an Octavia would allow a newer car to be bought for the budget. Newer cars tend to be more reliable.

Forget the C5 - they're too heavy and thus poor on fuel. My Dad's friend runs one as a hackney and is looking to swap it for a Superb.

I don't think you can go wrong with either a Mondeo or a Superb.

My dad has an Octavia as a Taxi. He wanted a Superb but things didn't fall into place (he needed a car quickly as his old one literally blew up). The back isn't massive, but its hardly small, and it makes up for it by having an enormous boot.

Also, when I checked I couldn't see anything about Skoda preventing Taxi drivers extending the warranty on them either. My dad hasn't hit that stage yet so I can't be sure though.

The logic that you can buy an Octavia cheaper than a Superb that are of similar age/mileage?

You can also buy a Fabia cheaper than an Octavia that are of similar age/mileage. Well done on being obvious.

You said the Octavia would be more reliable than the Superb because it's newer, please explain.

Skoda most definitely. They're tanks.

Octavia and Superb are both good choices, heck even a Fabia's not a shabby choice if that's all that can be afforded. Personally I'd go for a Superb Estate.

Because a 2012 Octavia with 20k miles is likely to be more reliable than a 2010 Superb and 40k miles (assuming they had the same engine) because it is 2years newer and has done 20k less miles

So?

Age and Mileage has no relevance on the condition and treatment the car has been kept in. For example compare a 1 year old rental car with 10k miles on it, and a well maintained 5 year old car with 60k on the clock.

I know which I'd rather have.

Not necessarily if both have been serviced and looked after properly. Plus there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference in price between the two anyway for a given age and mileage.

Oh for god sake. We're not comparing a rental car and a beautifully maintained car though are we? Yes I'm sure there are many cases when the Superb would prove to be more reliable but that is why I said the Octavia is likely to be more reliable.

It was just an example.

ajstan the problem is you can't draw that conclusion because it's on a case by case basis and thus there's no point in discussing. A superb will be more spacious and therefore better for a taxi however you can't go wrong with an Octavia either.

To be fair we are talking a minimal difference in price between the Superb and the Octavia, which is why the Superb is always recommended, as you get a lot more car for your money.

So with such a minimal difference in age/mileage, reliability isn't even a consideration. It's hardly comparing a delivery mileage 2013 Ford Focus to a 200k mileage Y reg Focus is it!!
